i've been prescribed ssris for anxiety but i've heard about the nasty side effects theyre having on people. is it just overhyped or are they legit evil?

I've been reckoning with this question as well. Despite strides I have made, my social anxiety leaves me unable to mesh well with "popular" groups (I'm a college student). I've been taking Buspirone for about a month but all it has done is make me tired and dizzy.

Been taking sertraline (zoloft) for a few months - absolute lowest dose possible but it has made a big difference for me. Also prescribed for anxiety/panic. Still get a few symptoms but the goal is to make things manageable not completely stop the feelings. I'm more aware of the symptoms and can recognise the thoughts are unhelpful to my daily life and relationships.
Think the mistake some people make is expecting too much, you still feel the anxiety but its not overwhelming the same way. If you try to feel nothing - you take too much and get all the horrible side effects.

From personal experience and anecdotes, pretty much ever psychiatric drug has wildly different effects depending on the individual. Anything that affects brain chemistry, even stuff like GLPs. For some, it can be an elixir that makes them instantly functional people, while for others it turns them into zombies. The "purposed" effects of psych drugs are based on averaged findings in studies, but the subjects of those studies all have highly varied experienced, making the "average" finding functionally useless as a predictor.
All this to say who knows, but there are no permanent effects of SSRIs or really any psych drug. If they make you feel like shit, just stop taking them.

be very careful with SSRIs for the first time - some people do not tolerate them well (myself included). if your actual underlying issue is bipolar disorder, for example, SSRIs can cause a manic episode. If you start being unable to sleep regularly let your doctor know
