I think their reasoning is largely because if you ask, it signals to them that you're insecure in some way and are less likely to consider leaving them, or at least triggers contempt. A lot of guys don't cheat simply because they're horny, they cheat because their gf isn't giving them something, whether its attention, affection, etc, and have created an environment where the bf feels like he can't talk about shit without being judged or disregarded.
My recent ex was a massive pain in the ass. Constant drama, constant games and "shit tests", and the lovely term "emotional labor". I have very bad ADHD, but I pay my bills immediately because then I don't have to think of it. This cunt would forget rent, forget to pay her phone bill, pissed away her scholarship and grants on doordash 3x a day (even after buying a pantry full of groceries). Couldn't do half of her course shit without someone helping her, which often meant waking me up at 3am to help her with whatever retarded art shit she forgot to do until the night before, because if she left the doors would lock. Only time she would compliment me or drop the bullshit was when she thought I was out the door. Like, she had a horrible gag reflex, and after a while I realized the only time I'd get anything resembling head was when she acted like a fuckup and I was visibly pissed off. Ended up cheating on her with an old fwb so that there was no going back, and now I live with the fwb and despite her problems, there's very little drama.
