how did people get fat before fast food and ultra processed snacks were everywhere? Who had the time and money to be fat in the old days?

By eating 'processed foods' of yesteryear. Fast food like mcdonalds didn't exist but bags of salt and lard did exist.

People who arent exposed to gross amounts of fat and sugar from a young age simply wouldnt be interested in eating to excess. Their bodies will keep them naturally slim which is how humans evolved to live.

Whats not normal is having access to slabs of lard and bags of salt and sugar and being able to throw it into shameful concoctions of calories to shovel down your gullet

Same way they get fat today—living sedentary lives and overeating. It’s not like there were no calorie dense foods in the past. Might not deep fry oreos in vegetable oil, but they’d definitely cook with tallow, lard, olive oil, etc. Sugar existed too, and desserts and other high fat, calorie dense foods. Just had to have the money for it.

You should look up the dietary habits of legendary German statesman Otto von Bismarck, he was apparently a notorious glutton before eventually being put on a special diet by his doctor. I remember reading some of the anecdotes about his eating/drinking habits while dealing with matters of state, they were pretty legendary. I will try to find them.

Basically, in the past it meant that you had money because you could afford quality food - and lots of it, and you didn't have to do physical labor for a living. Plus being German and drinking beer instead of water constantly doesn't help things.
