Assuming a good diet, how much walking do I need to do a day to make a dent in my weight?

It's not about how much you walk, it's more about consistency.

10k daily steps is a common goal because it's easily attainable for most people. You can use it as a base-line for your physical activity. But you have to be consistent. Get a step tracker and try to hit that goal every day. What this does is set you up to consistently burn the same amount of calories every day.

The next thing is to count every single calorie you put in your mouth every day. This allows you to consistently eat the SAME amount of calories every day.

Do this and weigh yourself for a couple weeks. If you're not gaining or losing, then the caloric amount you're eating every day is your maintenance. If you're gaining, then you're eating more than your maintenance and you can lower your daily calories by a couple hundred calories until you hit your maintenance.

Once you've identified your maintenance, you lower your calories below that and you'll lose fat. How much less you eat is up to you. I can tell you that 1,000 calories below maintenance is healthy, but you may not have the stamina to put up with it.

The important thing is that you're CONSISTENTLY active every day and CONSISTENTLY eating the same amount of calories every day so you have control over the numbers.

Walking doesn't burn nearly as much calories as you think it does. Losing weight is 95% diet. In order to lose weight primarily through exercise you would have to exert yourself a lot for long periods of time, to the point where the exertion would make you very hungry in turn. Dieting is for losing weight, exercise is for building strength, athleticism and staying healthy.

>Walking doesn't burn nearly as much calories as you think it does.
as opposed to what? what other cardiovascular effort can u do continuously for dozens of minutes without stopping? without any preparation whatsoever, any know-how, nothing is required really ? i can't think of any other thing

an hour a week is plenty, that's 10 minutes a day, but u don't want to do it everyday
>huwhy not
cause u want your walking longer than 10 minutes :D cause 20 minute walk is FUN, it's relaxing refreshing, it's good
>how do u know
i did 40 minutes+ sessions of paced walking with perfectest posture i can muster past winter and it was a tad too taxing :D it would have been wiser to split it in 2
