>join martial arts gym as a beginner to get fit and confident
>get paralyzed from the neck down
I understand SOME minor injuries in martial arts gyms are acceptable. But I read countless posts by you anons saying
>yeah, my shoulder is fucked up now
>yeah, i got my nose broken in sparring
>yeah, i snapped my muscle/tendon in [insert martial art]
How is this ok and acceptable? You are paying money and got a pretty decent chance that your instructor or some asshole sparring guy cripples you. There's a dude on Youtube who reports on fatal or severe martial arts gym injuries and he got literally hundreds of videos.

Picrel is bullshit btw
The instructor did a perfectly normal back take, iirc the guy was trying a granny roll at the same time, his head got stuck while his body went the other way. Both guys were great jiu jitsu players, think the guy was a purple belt, it was a fuck up, shit happens
Rener gracie got himself into the trial as an expert witness and declared that gyms letting white belts roll with upper belts is terrible, which is fucking retarded
The instructor has to pay up like $20 million because he didn't have shit like "a written curriculum" and he didn't segregate his beginners from his upper belts. Absolute madness - if you've never trained just trust me
It's a bit like in rock climbing, lots of gyms have these machines called auto belays - you clip yourself into the rope and climb, and when you come off the wall the machine lowers you down. Some fucking retard didn't clip himself in, climbed up then let go and fell, then sued. The gym caved and paid out millions because this guy was a fucking retard, and now there's a good chance we'll lose auto belays because gyms will be afraid to keep them. But they're immensely useful machines, and they're easy to use safely, but because of one negligent idiot we're all punished
Fucking lawsuit culture and the outsourcing of responsibility drives me up the wall. When I climb on an autobelay I have a ritual with how I hook it in, and I also check it's in when I'm a few metres up the wall. Lo and behold, I've never fallen off one and broken both my legs

Oh yeah, so some gyms are run like gangs and they will fuck up a new guy, but this is quite rare (outside of Brazil)
Because it's bad business sense - gyms keep them lights on from newbies coming in, they need new blood all the time
Injuries happen inevitably, they're combat sports

In Germany it's completely normal to have 12/24 month contracts. So they could not care less if they scare you off or treat you like shit. If you stop going there after a month or two, you still have to pay, which is arguably better for them, because they get money for zero service. In my city a dogshit ass gym is notorious for roughing up newbies in sparring for that reason.

Yeah I got my blue belt in BJJ and then decided to quit because I deemed it's not worth the injury risk. I fractured my hand, tore a ligament in foot, and sprained my ankle during my time training. To be fair, only the sprained ankle was because my training partner was retarded, the other one's were just accidents. Still, I think that past a certain point in BJJ, say around blue belt level, you've already learned and refined the basics that would actually be helpful in a fight, and now you're risking great injury to learn sport jiu jitsu. Knee and spinal injuries are quite common in grappling. The benefit of striking arts is that you're a lot less likely to cripple your body, but you have to be wary of brain trauma

>The instructor did a perfectly normal back take
No it fucking wasn't.
If the black belt did everything right, he wouldn't have snapped the white belts neck. I don't get how this is such a hard fucking concept for people to understand.

If you attempt this roll from the back, you make sure the bottom guy can move his head and the way the move is actually taught is to put pressure on the head to get him to move with you. The black belt """instructor """ did not give a shit about any of that and went full force forward. The coaches at the gym even confirmed the way the guy did the roll is not the way they teach it. The whole thing was a clear case, Rener bullshitting or not.

And if you didn't talk out of your ass you'd know that when health services insurances are involved in the US you basically have to sue unless you want to go bankrupt. Rener obviously took the side of the guy who got hurt over the insurance company who refused to pay, because he's not a terrible human being, unlike you.

Then you can go challenge the jujitsu bros and when they get on their back like a bunch of queers you can hand fight them for control, understand how not to get choked out, and beat the shit out of them. Any wrestler who knows how to turtleneck and not get choked will beat the JJ fag 9/10 times.

You’re retarded and have never seen the inside of a combat sports gym. You’re entirely at the mercy of the opponent when you first start out and it takes at least a month of consistent training to grasp the basics and be able to defend yourself, and that’s against a similar level beginner or intermediate, forget doing shit to an active competitor.

Healable injuries are to be expected at the higher levels. I had a concussion once or twice (not sure about the second time) and a few cuts (bcs apparently, rubber knives will tear the skin if they're fast enough...). Shouldn't happen to beginners, but accidents occur there too sometimes.

However, the serious injuries you're referring to, with almost no exceptions, are due to people expecting to be taught quickly and, ironically, safely. Seen things like that a few times as a teenager, from broken bones to a broken neck (which healed after th guy wore a brace for 3 months... he got lucky). For example, you shouldn't practice throws on mats. If you fall at a bad angle, the mat will literally stop your head in place, and damage your spine. If you train on a smooth, rather hard surface, it's easy to roll and disperse the force, provided you've spent the 3-4 weeks it takes to get good at falling.
However, if you tell people as much, they tend to leave in droves, and go to different gyms. Over the years, I've lost a few dozen pupils from refusing to teach them throws before the could fall, or forbidding them from using the thick mats for anything other than backfalls.
At least one of them is crippled by now, from getting his knee tendons torn while practicing a kick defense.

Carrying a knife or expanding baton in your pants is easy. Clipped into the right front pocket (or left, if you're left handed), you can rest your thumb on it without being obvious, and draw within a splitsecond. No slower than getting your guard up, except you now have a weapon in hand.

Anyone can get to a subsecond draw and first shot on target with enough practice. The only real situation where draw speed is an issue for a trained individual is someone has a gun already drawn on you.

Knives are pretty shit self-defense weapons, They're very lethal but not particularly effective at incapacitation, which is the exact opposite of what you want in self-defense, ideally you want something that stops the person from being a threat instantly with minimal risk of death and the legal consequences that come with that, ethical considerations aside even if you were in the right and are found innocent in the end, it's still a very lengthy, stressful and expensive process. Knives primarily incapacitate (and kill) through heavy exsanguination which is very slow in the context of a fight, you can cut someone's throat and they will still have about half a minute to fuck you up before passing out, there is a lot of footage of people getting stabbed in the neck with a very strong, visible arterial bleeding and still acting like not much has happened. There's a reason why the saying goes
>in a knife fight the loser dies in the street, the winner dies in the hospital
If you're not going to carry a firearm then your best choice is a taser (an actual one that shoots electrodes) but these are very expensive and bulky, so the next most effective and realistic option is pepper spray. Stun guns (the kind that require contact) and batons are less effective mostly because they require willingly getting into melee with someone, which is the opposite of what you want to reduce risk.

TL;DR carry a firearm and a pepper spray, or just the pepper spray if noguns. Martial arts are very far from the most effective self-defense tool, though being somewhat competent at them doesn't hurt.
