People use food to alter their mood (rather than to sustain their bodies) all the time. They use it the same way cigarette smokers use nicotine. You don't smoke it, you don't inject it, and you don't snort it. There's little social stigma associated with it. To the contrary, in many social situations, you're expected to overeat. In fact, it is often taboo to be the only one at the dinner table among friends, family, colleagues, etc eating healthy.
