Just do the easiest stretches for you. Don't overthink it. Literally just do whatever stretch you can do every day. For instance, when I lay on my couch or bed, I just do a couple minutes of laying straight leg raises with dorsiflexion to stretch my calves and hamstrings. I've made incredible progress over the past couple weeks.

There's a difference between being excessively flexible and being functionally flexible.

If you can carry objects, pick things off the ground, sit comfortably in a slav squat, and walk up hills in hiking.
Anything more is just retarded autofellatio and you will never use it. Maybe during sex.

You are a fat stiff piece of shit. Who cares about reducing injury rate, having better lifting mechanics and form, being more coordinated and athletic, having healthier joints, or having good posture? As long as you can pick things up off the ground. What a load of cope. Unbelievable.

Because I was fucken not and have never successfully developed it in any capacity. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. If you say "stretch dummy" I'll assume you were born with it and leave.

I found a couple of his videos by happenstance earlier this year and decided to start training to do the splits, just because I personally think it'd be cool.
Treating stretching like a dedicated workout instead of a half-assed post-workout way to try to mitigate DOMS has been awesome.
Plus I can drop in at a yoga class to talk to women and not struggle with every pose like a floundering tard.

not quite correct. the best research out there on stretching shows diminishing returns past a 30-second hold. it's actually more effective to hold for 30 than for 60.
but you have to stretch a given muscle for a combined total of at least 5 minutes per week to get significant gains. luckily, many stretches hit several muscles at a time, so you don't just have to do the same pose 10 times.

Get your story straight. Anyway, I agree it's diminishing returns, but so is everything when it comes to fitness, frankly. It is definitely not more effective to stretch less than to stretch more, though. There is no upper limit on stretching. Someone who stretches 60 minutes every day will become more flexible faster than someone who stretches 5 minutes every day.

Your reading comprehension needs work.
What I mean is 30s at a time is more effective than 60s at a time. You have to let the muscle come out of the stretch.
It's the same way that doing a bicep curl, you have to go through the range of motion; if you just hold the weight with your forearm pointed up, it's not going to do very much.

I'm not going to bother with arguing about which is more effective or about your bad analogy. I will say, though, that the phrase you're looking for isn't "diminishing returns." Because that phrase implies 60 seconds is more effective than 30 seconds, but proportionally much more difficult to do. You wouldn't use the phrase "diminishing returns" to describe something that is both more difficult to do and that has less overall output than the easier option.

I've trained actual circus performers and dancers and can promise you that flexibility is the most genetically pre-determined aspect of fitness, far more so that strength, size or stamina.

These shills gloss over the fact that muscle length is rarely the limiting factor during these feats of flexibility. Your bone structure and tendon composition are so much more influential; both of these things are almost entirely genetic. Some people are just "generally hypermobile" as we say in the business. Their joints have shallow sockets and their tendons have a different collagen structure. Funnily enough, both of these things are correlated with autism btw

The side splits are a classic example of this. If you'll look at my shitty picrel, you'll see a normal male hip on the left and a dysplasic (likely female) hip on the right. If the guy on the left does the side splits *even if his adductors are flexible,* eventually his femur impinges upon his hip socket. He'll probably stretch for years, only to tolerate the pinching pain but never really eliminate it - truth is, you can't out-stretch bad bone structure.

The hip on the right meanwhile, will do the splits effortlessly. This person may ironically feel more tightness in their muscles, simply because the lack of a deep socket to provide stability means that the muscles have to tense up constantly or the hip will dislocate.

This flexy dude is most likely born with general hypermobility, he might even have a connective tissue disorder like Marfan's syndrome. The biggest signs are a) he whines about being in pain all the time and b) he's flexible EVERYWHERE. Like, he's flexible in his fingers, neck, spine, toes - do you seriously think he's training every single joint? No. Trained adaptations are local but genetic ones are usually body-wide.

Yes. He does train his whole body and he used to be very inflexible, unless you think he is simply lying but I doubt it. He complains of pain because he has psoriasis that has progressed to his joints.

your skepticism is warranted but to be charitable, in the Flexxy dude's video about the middle splits he explains the exact thing in your image, and how to account for it. It's totally possible he started from a genetic advantage, but he also could have just been interested in flexibility when he was younger and more naturally flexible, the way most people tend to be as kids.
And pedantically, it's not gingivitis that was made up by Listerine, it's halitosis. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums.

Oh, you're just a lil retarded. That's OK, let me explain.
"Gingiv-" is a prefix referring to the scientific/Latin name for the gums, "gingiva."
"-itis" is a common medical condition referring to inflammation. Appendicitis = inflammation of the appendix. Meningitis = inflammation of the meninges.
Gingivitis is just inflammation of the gums. It's not a "disease," but it can be a symptom of several oral infections. You can make the argument that Listerine has tried to attribute most gingivitis to a made-up illness that they claim their product can treat, but that's a vastly different thing than saying gingivitis itself is made up. You can see inflamed gums with your own naked eyes.

>Doesn't have a connective tissue disorder
Thing is, he doesn't need a full blown *disorder* like Marfan's. Most hypermobile women in my office have no actual disease, they just have more elastic collagen in their connective tissue than normal or they're pregnant or their estrogen is crazy high. Therefore he may not have a "disorder" but he may have a genetic advantage. Hypermobility is a spectrum but even people at the low end of that spectrum aren't "normal." Pic related kinda explains what I mean.

Does that make him misleading? Depends. I think it's misleading to say you're healthy just because you're flexible. Most of my elderly patients wish they were strong enough to not live in a nursing home, they don't care about doing the splits.

>stay flexxy!!!
All this is dumb anyway because that level of flexibility is not always good. People have this idea that flexible = healthy, but what if you're a runner who doesn't even need that much mobility? With great mobility comes more instability. Again, the patients I see with super flexible hips, spines and shoulders have to deal with more problems than "normal" people. I have a friend with hips that can easily do the splits, but her hip dislocates upon standing. Same with shoulder dislocations.

>ok but I just wanna be mobile
Stretching does work, just to be clear. It's trendy to hate on stretching but most studies show that it is still effective - however it is much slower than just doing strengthening through a large range of motion - we're talking years of works vs months. Also the injury-prevention properties of large-ROM strengthening (like nordic curls or deep RDLs) are unparalleled.

stretching is retarded and so are you, muscle is tight because it's injured and/or weak, sometimes it's unevenly developed - like in bench where sternal part pecs have no chance to work due to shoulder retraction and ribs poking muscle but armpit part will be working - this will result in tight injured and weak muscle

and u say
>just tug on it for few years and it will be good ... eventually, after few years xD

no, u gotta STOP benching and actually grow big and healthy pecs and serratus for shoulder stability, like so:

Honestly, it's boring but the reality is that doing your usual 2-3 compounds 2-3 times a week is 90% of what you need. There are extra exercises I do that are more geared towards injury prevention but their just part of my regular workout. Some examples include:

> sidelying external rotation
It's basically that rotator cuff exercise you see everybody doing but on lying on your side, pic related. Mechanically it's far better than doing it standing whilst being less exhausting. My patients start at 2-3kg and aim for 30-40 reps (lower rep ranges are just too heavy). I've never had anybody do more than 4kg properly.

>standing banded hip abduction
Basically crab walks but more tailored to running. if you do this right, both lateral glutes should be burning. For runners I will unironically have them aim for >30 reps for the sake of endurance.

Honestly, basic strength is all you really need. If you can do an RDL, lunge, squat or trap bar deadlift through good range and a slow-ish tempo, just focus on that.

Yes, you will eventually be able to do the splits if you're healthy. However, the work may not be worth it.
Or do you really think every karate, TKD, kickboxing, ballet, gymnastics etc. player was born hyperflexible?

Protip: If you have a healthy human body you can train it to do pretty much anything, that's why we're the dominant species, we can get used to any environmental factor on earth.
If you hear someone say speed, power, flexibility etc. are genetic and can't be trained, his training methods suck and he's coping.

I dislike the guy's gib too, but "there really isnโ€™t any point to flexibility after a certain amount" is a silly thing to say when people spend their time and effort doing way dumber shit like playing video games and watching netflix shows.

>Tfw hypermobile joints
>tfw shoulders (painlessly) dislocate from the weight of themselves when I bend over
>tfw hips PAINFULLY dislocate when I flex my hip and then lean on that side

What can I do? I've just been told to become as hypertrophic as possible as more muscles would help hold the joints in place. picrel is me btw

>UHM THE MAP COLOR CHANGED THAT MEANS IT DOESNT MATTER THEY KILLED FIFTY MILLION OF US
Slavs lost WWII no matter how you look at it.
There is no such thing as a country, there are only men, Germany, Russia, USSR, Poland, these are abstractions, the Slavs lost 50m men, real men, real people, real ilyas who's women are given to German and Asian men. Germany lost a grand total of 2.4m men.
The Slavs still have not surpassed their 1939 population.
ethnic Germans are already more numerous than they were in 1939.

>what do I do?
Generally, yes, you gotta train to get big *however* there's a few key changes that a hypermobile person should make to their training:
> slow or very slow tempo for compound lifts.
You're not just building strength, you're trying to teach your muscles to actively control every inch of movement

> Start with a smaller ROM.
Don't bottom-out during RDLs, try first instead to only do the first 60-80% of the movement. Hypermobile people tend to only have good strength at the extremes of ROM, but not the middle. Once you master this, aboslutely got for full ROM

>focus on posterior muscles for both the his and shoulder
focus on rows, rear delts, triceps and rotator cuff for the shoulder. Hip instability cases will focus 90% on their glutes in the early stage. Literally have more meat in your butt creates a literal barrier that prevents posterior dislocation. Eventually you can add resisted hip flexion like leg raises.

>Keep an eye on your shoulder
The is a form of shoulder hypermobility that requires surgery. If you dislocate it hard enough, you can get what's called a Bankart lesion, wherein you chip off part of your glenoid (the "socket"). If you lose enough of this, no amount of muscle strength will help you might need something called a laterjet reconstruction.

In short, slow tempo and controlling the whole ROM is crucial. rows, ring rows, shrugs and side-lying external rotation will help for the shoulder, whilst light RDLs, bridges and clams are starting points for the hip. This won't reduce the hypermobility, just make it manageable.
