/fat/ - Fat Loss General
>Who is /fat/ for?
For dubious dietitians working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.

>What do I do first?
1. Read
https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage:
https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE:
https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss:
https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).
>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky:
https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html
>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

I have to mention something here. You will not achieve any of this if you're not in the mood to do it. The most important thing is love, you have to like what you do in order to continue doing it.
(Reposting just this once on top of a new thread)
I lost 80 kgs on keto over the course of 16 months and since January this year have regained nearly 70 kgs back. I am not kidding this is serious. I went through some tough time in January and dieting had given me a terrible sense of anhedonia where I couldn't find joy in anything and was quickly becoming severly depressed and then I went back to my old habits and found it almost impossible to stop all the eating and drinking I did until 8 months later (now). Can I please get some advice for when I lose it again on how NOT to regain it. I heard people on low-fat and low calorie restriction diets keep it off the most. All replies welcome.

Finally seeing 127-130 consistently in the mornings. I'd love to always see 120 something instead of hovering right around 130.
My secret is replacing snacks and some meals with yummy coffees. The coffee is always less caloric than whatever food I had in mind, or it's simply easier than figuring out something to eat.
I went harder than planned on my run this morning and my legs are extra sore now, but it was worth it, I felt amazing during and after it. I love running! Especially before work when I have the whole world to myself.

Here's your mistake. It's not that keto doesn't work, it's that you were not thinking about sustainable change. You need to change your lifestyle, not hop on a diet and hope the weight is going to stay off once you're done with it.
And keto is unsustainable in long term. Only skinnyfat crab crusaders advocate for it.

Thanks, I generally thought I could somehow get off the diet and ease myself into eating carbs and healthy again. During the last couple of weeks of the diet I was emotionally dis-regulated and was wondering why this was happening when I should be happy and joyful that I am no longer categorically obese. I guess there is no cheating or shortcuts with this thing. Hmpff.

I think the (sad) fact we all have to realize is that this will be a life long struggle. At no point from now, until we die, can we allow ourselves to let the foot off the gas.
Maybe at some point in the waaaay future we can not think about it as much, but usually I just end up fat again after a short while.
I think Christ Pratt said it best when he shed all his weight. The fun times used to be when eating, and then everything in between sucked. Now it's the meal times that suck, but everything in between eating is great.

Keto kilos tend to come back even without other problems once you switch back to non-carb restricted diet. Either you continue on keto for ever (good luck with that...) or structure your life around generally eating less and healthier food.
Yes, it's tough, but you're allowed to fail as long as you keep getting back on it. Slow and steady wins the game.

I've looked into Alcoholics Anonymous and they have the right idea when it comes to addicts and their addictions. Whether its booze, drugs, sex or over-eating we are born different to other people in the sense that our brain has unfortunately developed a self-destructive pattern with tasty food and the sooner we admit we have no control, the sooner we will come to terms and build a new life which learns to navigate this terrible habit.
People love to live in a dream world. The phenomenon of addiction is a disease of vagueness. We need clarity to keep us on track.

Yes I used food to cope growing up in a violent psychologically torturous home. I spent years healing and moving on from my trauma, learning to forgive and let go and though I am now a completely different and better person then I was before. Despite the money I spent on therapy and books on psychology I read I am still as helpless as I was before in the face of my addiction. The day I decide to not weight myself in, say to myself I should just eat whatever I want without considering the calories consumed is the day I undo thousands of hours at a gym and spiral back into morbid 4 obese fatty who doesn't leave the house.

Best advice I can give is when you start after a long pause, and care about muscle mass and looks, start bulking first, sounds counterintuitive, but your maintenance calories will go up so the more muscle mass you have the easier it is to keep a deficit and the more muscle you have the easier it is to offset any muscle loss you get from cutting.
If you're already decently strong, you're good to cut if you keep working out, but don't expect to grow much muscle, but the muscle you have will be more refined.
Just don't forget to stop bulking at some point otherwise you'll end up like a bull with a massive rhino-neck

ok well obviously I needed the extra help, and it is working, I'm down 1 lb from last week, and I can actually feel that I'm not hungry at all really
heaviest was like 320-325 last year
I also did an enclomiphene, ac262, tesofensine, mk677 cycle earlier this year so considering I was taking a ghrelin agonist I'd say I'm doing pretty well considering I was counterfucking my progress pretty hard by doing that

nigga you lost 12.6 pounds in 3 months using that stack weighing 315? i lost more than that in 5 weeks starting at 210, and i started creatine in that time so that's not including creatine bloat. it's time to stop the cycle and sort out the diet and exercise. 12 lbs is practically what you should piss out in the first couple of weeks of your diet at that weight

being charitable to you, you need to actually go get your biomarkers tested. with that kind of difficulty for that level of progress, you might have a thyroid issue and/or highly suppressed sex hormones. provided you have access to health care, at your weight it is easy to throw out the peptides and just get put on a glp-1 agonist.

Im top right. My routine changes every few months. I do 5x a week hypertrophy blocks split by body part, hitting each body part 2x a week for about 12-16 weeks at a time. I can only handle this for that length of time before I start backsliding due to too much accumulated fatigue. Then I do strength full body blocks 3-4x a week for about the same time. For cardio I was doing 5-6x a week liss stationary bike and recently moved on to hill sprints. Im at my parents house for the week desperately trying not to gain weight before I head to japan next week. Got drunk with my brosnlast night and went to primanti bros and just had an indian buffet with my mom a few mins ago. Time to nap. Also my most recent diet was 1900-2000 calories a day 140g+ protein. Typical day of eating was oatmeal and greek yogurt for breakfast, chickfila fried sandwich and a market salad with light dressing for lunch, and a pound of 99% lean turkey for dinner. Probably a bit more yogurt as a late night snack.

I personally sought out several things to fix that, while being legal, and cost efficient, and I found them and it is working, quite well, especially cardarine
my endocrine system already wasn't performing properly, so I've fixed that problem, and the more I move and the more I can abstain from food, which I am now able to do much easier, the feedback loop will continue, I will lose weight thus making it easier for me to move, etc

Cleaned up my diet slowly over time, but for the first year or two Id binge on the weekends because of poor discipline. And thank you I did my best to get in shape. Everyone says Im ripped now when they saw this trip back to my home state. Very satisfying. Best advice I can give is find a form of lifting and cardio you enjoy, find ways to eat clean enough to lose some weight for long periods of time, take diet breaks every 10 weeks or so, and dont death spiral when you fuck up.

To supplement meat I've been experimenting with these "textured s o y protein" nuggets I bought on impulse to get a cheap protein source. After some false starts I think I've found a way to season and prepare them so they're not completely disgusting.
Ate some wok with them in it six hours ago, still not hungry. Met my macros and calories. If I don't start growing tits or anything I'll consider this a success.

I promised I'd make your dish yesterday and I did.
Overall a nice little recipe. The char from the roasting adds some bitterness, which I happen to like but I can imagine some anons disliking, and it's a little unfortunate that the broccoli lost most of its crunch from being cooked with the sauce. The flavors are nice though, and it's a tasty, saucy and warm dish overall. Maybe more of a autumn/winter dish than a summer dish all things considered. I used some homemade tomato sauce and chicken stock for the thinning out. This recipe goes into the rotation I think, it's novel enough to change things up when I get sick from my usual recipes.
The biggest realization for me was using the collagen to cook with. I've been consuming it mixed with water and hating every second of it, holding my nose and drinking it in one go to get it over with, because it tastes pretty bad. For some reason I assumed heating it/cooking with it was bad due to the denaturation process, but I looked it up and apparently that's not an issue and it basically disappears into the tomato sauce, with basically no aftertaste.
So more than the actual dish, you've given me a way to consume my collagen without wanting to kms, so thank you very much for that anon, it's legitimately been the most unpleasant part of my diet so far.
Overall I'd recommend cooking it, it's a nice recipe. If not now, then when autumn truly comes.
I've been avoiding /fat/ out of shame and denial so just posting this is a step in the right direction

While I can't speak for nuggets, I often have some tofu at home because it keeps ages in the fridge and if you have no protein at home it's my fallback. Lately I've tried something that they call "s(n)oy granulate" which is supposed to replace ground beef I think (it doesn't), but put it into some broth for 5 minutes and add it to any saucy dish and you've got some more texture and a lot more protein in your dish, plus it's shelf stable, honestly pretty based. Not a daily thing, but a great addition.
It's like nutritional yeast in that it's one of those things the vegans have that make sense for non-vegans too.

>but the texture seems always a bit off
It basically gets soggy the way I make it, so you have to make it become part of a tomato sauce, or when I make my vegetable stew I throw some in. If you actually want texture I don't think that's possible outside of some weird schizoid method of soaking, then draining, then using some binder or some shit.
If you're considering meat alternatives, I find tempeh to be both tasty and easier to cook than tofu, but it's overpriced as shit where I live and it needs to be frozen, best I can do is make my own. Tofu is also decent but it's a lot harder to cook right, most preparations suck ass.
I like the way the chinese do it where they use some meat to flavor the snoy protein.

Been there, done that. I don't envy you for your position, it took me a long time to get over mine.
>1. Force myself to sleep right
Exercise, blue light hygiene, healthy eating, sleeping and rising with the sun, hydration and you're halfway there.
>2. Use that newfound routine to eat better
Good, but don't expect it to magically appear after your sleep is better. You have to put in the effort.
>3. Translate the increase in energy from steps 1 & 2 into being less sedentary
I'd start with exercise to fix sleep, not sleep to fix exercise.
>4. Prevent another 'episode' by tackling the core issue: >poorly managed 'tism
Finding the root is good. The key to fixing my depression was understanding it and myself better, cringe as that sounds.
It's a bit of a meme, but your plan could use some more specificity. Consider writing your plan down like this

Id run the beginner barbell program for another few months, but what you linked seems solid.
This is also a good program
https://www.boostcamp.app/coaches/bald-omni-man/raider
As far as back pain, Id say take a deload week. Do only 2 sets of each exercise at half weight while really taking the time to learn the form. Also try to go to the pool 2 or 3 times that week and just lounge there for a while or take epsom salt baths. One thing thats imoortant to note about lifting programs is that theyre only as good as the gusto you bring to them. As long as youre giving it your all and getting rest and protein, they're likely going to give you gains. Dont get analysis paralysis.

Its originally why I started making it actually, as a way to mask the collagen. At first I was mixing protien powder, collagen peptides and creatine into water and trying to chug it down, it was hard to dissolve and mix it all and it tasted awful. The I thought about using it in cooking and the idea came to me to mix it into a sauce, pretty much masked the flavor completely and it worked as a thickening agent.
When you add the broccoli to the sauce will determined how much crunch it has, you can withhold it until the end, mixing it in seconds before serving to maximize crunch, or you can add it early and let it dissolve into it. I happen to like both ways. Ive experimented with doing both at once, leaving the florets out until the very end to keep them crunchy while stewing the stalks directly in the sauce to infuse that broccoli flavor into the sauce, came out quite good.

It's extremely difficult to gain muscle without excess calories, yes.
You're only going to be putting on 5-10lbs on a bulk which you can quickly lose since unlike /fat/ posters you'll have muscle, and you drop down so quick that your gains are preserved.

Fat loss is slower, I mean on the order of a year or more to really see improvement in body fat but it's certainly possible. It is an over generalization to say you cant build muscle in caloric deficit but it is challenging and requires you track protein consumption and calories religiously. I tried to do a recomp and lost about 10lbs of fat and made huge gains in strength but this took about 6 months. The instant I stopped trying to recomp and just started cutting I lost weight very rapidly. Its just not the best way to do it.

Down from aprox 93kg in aprox September through kj reduction diet of aprox 7,500kj per day (aprox 1800cal), running usually twice a week, low weight high rep weight lifting once or twice a week.
I am now essentially at a "healthy" weight, except of course it looks terrible as I still have a high bodyfat %.
According to
https://www.calculator.net/body-fat-calculator.html with my height and weight and a neck circumference of 38cm and a waist circumference at the naval of 97.2cm I have 24.8% bodyfat.
I asked in April when I think I was 82 or 80kg and was told I needed to switch to a high weight low rep routine and increase the number of days, before I could do this however I developed tendonitis in my right arm and so any weight lifting above the waist is very limited since it all involves the arms.
(one reason I had been doing low weight/high rep had been to avoid injury so much for that)
So long as I'm careful picking up and putting down the weight I can still do goblin squats, I have found pushups dont cause immediate pain in my arm, and for lack of anything else to do I have added situps. I also do forearm extensors and flexors for the tendonitis.
What can I do about my high bf%?

Bmi doesnt really mean that much, your weight is fine but you are still carrying a lot of fat and bugger all muscle.
Aim for a more reasonable calorie deficit ~500 cals and try and not lose what little muscle you have while cutting more.
Once you get down to a reasonable bf level, start eating again and try to build some muscle.

>t I think it's way overestimating my exercise. Will this fix itself overtime the more I weigh in and it fixes its algorithm on me?
Not really. It will adjust down as you lose weight, but it operates fine with only 1 current weigh in, so if there is a problem (a major discrepancy over time between expected and actual weight loss) you're going to need to adjust the way you are logging your exercise to match what is actually happening.
The app is not magic, it can only estimate based on what you are giving it, and the standards it has for whatever exercise you are putting in might not match your personal standards. If you log 30 mins of "hard" swimming, but you're actually swimming at what the app considers a "medium" rate, your entries and therefore your expenditure are going to be skewed.
also note what this guy said:
>>76477007
You've got tracker activity being counted, so make sure you aren't manually logging any of that as exercise.

There are 1000 ways you can put chicken and broccoli together into a meal. Get creative and experiment. The goal is the nutritional value, its a unbeatencombo with high protein and a good amount of fiber (great even, if you eat the stalks) and various vitamins and minerals. You can make a stir fry, oven bake them, add them to a soup or stew, add other veggies, various seasoning profiles, pan fry them, your options a limitless. Chicken is so versatile you can season it up a different way everyday of the week. If you find chicken and broccoli boring and monotonous its because you're boring and monotonous. With a 1500 to 1600 calorie limit you've got room to add other stuff but the chicken and broccoli core remains the same is the basic idea.
Also if you seriously exhaust your ability to eat chicken and broccoli your can swap them out for pork loins and kale. Or salmon and brussels sprouts. Or lean ground beef and bok choy.
Basically you can sum it up as. A meal comprised of a Lean source of complete protein and a cruciferous vegetable that fits your calorie budget.

Your brain is wired to reward you for providing it with things that are rare in nature, your pleasure centers still think you're a hunter gatherer foraging for enough energy to make it through the day. It wants stuff like salt, fats and sugar. When you eat a cheeseburger combo meal with a large milkshake on the side your brain thinks you had an incredibly successful hunt today and rewards you by releasing happy chemicals. It hasn't had time to evolve to this new 'agrarian lifestyle' thing, or this even newer 'industrial revolution' thing. It adapts to changes on the scale of 10s of thousands of years. It doesnt realize we can get all the salt, sugar, and fat we could ever want in a single chocolate bar for less than an hours work. When you eat normal food again its like, "where did all that easy fat, salt, and sugar go?" When you stop giving it tons of this stuff for long enough it will eventually reconfigure and start to reward you again and this time for a reasonable portion. But know you can easily fall off the wagon if you start giving it tons of fat and sugar again, its always eager to reward you for giving it lots if fats, salt, and sugar. Processed foods are absolutely stuffed with this stuff and keeps you addicted.

You can still treat yourself while on a deficit, berries in yogurt for example, you can even freeze it to approximate ice cream.
Or if you want an even lower calorie treat put a bunch of ice into a food processor to make snow, then put that in a bowl and hit it with some of that zero-calorie water flavoring syrup like Mio for some zero calorie snow cones.
Or if you've got some calories to spare you can even make a sort of ice cream out of protein powder
250 ml whole milk
1.5g xanthum gum
1 scoop protein powder
1 packed of sugar free pudding mix
