Gordon Ryan does bodybuilding. Paulo Costa did bodybuilding.

Kyle Kirvay, 2nd strongest powerlifter right now, does bodybuilding. The female GOAT of powerlifting did bodybuilding.

Bodybuilding by itself is not great for fighting or functional strength, but you can convert those muscles into functional if you learn and train. Then you have more muscle to work with for fighting, more back muscle for grappling, bigger shoulders for punching, a stronger neck for resisting blows and wrestling.

Did Muay Thai for a year. Realized I wasn't cut out for hitting and being hit all the time and now I do weightlifting. A lot of people in regular gyms walk around and size each other up like they want to fight; a lot of people in boxing gyms are really nice. I think actually fighting each other and everyone making a mental ranking of who beats who in a fight helps people grapple with their egos. Ironically it's the ones fighting all the time who end up not thinking about fighting everyone all the time.

Lifting weights is not for fighting, it's for lifting things.

Both fighting and lifting can be enjoyable. If anyone had to chose I would say do the one that makes you the happiest. The boxing gyms I have been in all had a squat rack, but what 90% of people lack for boxing is endurance, not muscle.

Got kind of involved in 2 fights (more like a bystander) and got punched 4 times and I have not seen a single punch coming. The movement never even registered. Tbf, the first one was a punch from a guy who did not show any signs of aggression and the other 3 were when I was trying to protect a friend in a mass brawl. I was super drunk each time but the experience was so weird. Like in one moment I see the guy in front of me, next thing I notice is the impact of the fist but mostly just the sound. Was that only because I was so drunk or is it something I can train and improve?

Being drunk certainly doesn't help, but yes it's normal if you're untrained and not expecting it, and yes you can train it. That's what sparring is for, as you become comfortable you're better able to predict what people will do an react quicker and more appropriately.

Try getting into a fight with a guy that has practiced armbars and rear naked chokes literally thousands of times against resisting training partners with your LARP street moves and see what happens.

The biggest advantage a trained MMA fighter has against a normal person is the utter lack of any hesitation. By the time the "street fighter" is aware the fight is for real, the MMA guy has already landed a three piece on him, dumped him on his head, or has a secure blood choke on his ass.

None of your eye gouging, biting, or picking up a brick is going to work. And never forget, an MMA fighter can do that to you as well and will likely be more effective than you at cheating tactics.

This is extremely disingenuous
These guys aren't "a muscular heavyweight", these are literally in the top 10 or so strongest people in the world, ditto for their amount of lean mass.
Heavyweight in boxing is anyone over 91kg.
Heavyweight in MMA is under 120.2 kg.
It goes without saying these guys are much heavier and much stronger than a typical heavyweight in either sport.

Any mid-tier IFBB pro is much stronger than 90% of heavyweights in either sport. Stronger than 80% of BJJ champions, 99% if we're talking about legs. That's without functional training: the muscle base boydbuilders have will mean IF they neurologically max out the strength of that muscle, they will be incredibly strong.

I picked Hafhtor and Shaw because they had 0 months of training. Imagine Ronnie Coleman with 6 months of training, or any bodybuilder for that matter, they would destroy the top 10 strongest men with no training.

Weightlifting is at best a good cross training supplement for a competitive fighter. No doubt power and speed matter a lot in fighting but lifting will only enhance you so much in these regards.

Yeah I’ve trained BJJ and Muay Thai and just came back to MMA after 7 years away.

Let’s get it out of the way though that this shit is mostly useless in a street fight. It always comes up and sport fighters always have to cop, given they have the luxury of never having to had find out for sure. A knife or a bottle beats an arm bar 100% of the time.

I don't buy this at all
IFBB pros are strong. But they they are lacking many attributes of strongmen.
Strongmen have fantastic coordination. Think about lifting an atlas stone compared to performing a squat or leg press.
Strongmen actually have decent endurance. Some of the challenges go on for minutes. Bodybuilders do not.
Strongmen are stronger obviously. And because strongmen are much taller, a strongman lifting a weight actually means they are stronger than a bodybuilder lifting the same weight. They are also very strong in ways that bodybuilders are not - things like grip strength, isometric strength, awkward postures and movements, unilateral movements etc - which are very relevant to fighting
Strongmen have much larger and stronger bones. Look how big elite strongmen's skulls and wrists hands are. They have the reach advantage and a height advantage.

I fought a faggot that did mma. I have no training. He outweighed me actually. I put him in a full nelson hold. All this to say more muscle would have had me murk him even easier. Cope

Of course they're stronger than strongman. I'm just saying with 6 months of training bodybuilders would be able to bridge that gap. Whereas we've seen BJJ blue belts and even some black belts are able to do nothing against strongman because they can't even BUDGE the strongman.

Cardio is the most important aspect for any combative for all history followed by strong legs and backs. Even fighting in a fucking phalanx or maniple its the guys who are getting tired first are the ones who get fucked because they lower their shields.

Yes, 2 hours every day is a hard sell and basically requires them to give up most other shit they might enjoy to fit it in unless they're just killing themselves every weekend.
I've done it before and I could only do it because I had no other life. Same shit as dumping a kid into a shitload of extracurriculars.

both give you different kinds of health issues but a smart bodybuilder is way less likely to get a life changing injury from a random training day.
that's the only reason i don't train martial arts anymore.
too many divorced dads trying to flex during sparring sessions nowadays and dumbass trainers too scared to tell them to fuck off.

I'm about 6 sessions in no gi bjj and I come from about 10 years of general lifting and powerlifting.

From my personal experience

1. I got a lot of compliments for my strength but ultimately got dominated by normies with no lifting xp.
2. Weight and height difference mogs muscularity
3. Cardio is more important than lifting
4. Get ready to get mogged by 18 year olds if you are over 30

Despite this it's very fun and a lot more stimulating than powerlifting.

Brother, this is delusional. You think Ronnie Coleman with 6 months of training has good enough cardio to fight the Mountain? Does Ronnie Coleman even have better cardio than the average 30 year old man? Do you think there's any world where an IFBB physique athlete with 6 months of training beats Eddie Hall with 0 training?
Have you even done 6 months of training? It ain't shit.

6 months is a massive difference compared to 0. Even 2 months is insanely different compared to 0, unless youre training once a week.

You are insane. Mass monsters have worse cardio than an untrained guy. There's no way the mass monster type bodybuilders could have even a decent level of cardio while maintaining anything close to that amount of mass. Ronnie Coleman would gas out very quickly. Whereas strongmen do have decent cardio, because they actually train it, and they have huge frames and major organs to allow for it.
