People constantly shit on Barbell programs like 5x5 and ss

>5’s of truth

I’m pretty convinced those guys never actually did those programs or they half assed it so they didn’t get any results. SL with a few accessories worked a treat for me.

Is 5x5 okay if I take out the squat in the 2nd day and add in chinups instead?

Nah, always do the core exercises, just add on some stuff. I turned it into pretty much a full body routine and it’s done me well.

This looks like a guy who does all those actually.

Yes

My friend cant keep up with it because squatting hard 3x a week is too much for him
I understand this and he goes while I'm there so I know he's ACTUALLY going to failure, but was skipping days solely because he doesn't want to squat
Just told him to replace squats on the deadlift day with 10x seated leg extensions because they just take less mental toll to failure and he's kept up with 3x a week 5x5 this way

The change isn't 'as good' but it makes him consistent and thats far better than pushing days back and only going 2-2.5 days a week average. Plus he enjoys it more and is eager to come with me to the gym.

I love squatting but there is no way my middle millenial ass can do it two or three a week whilst also deadlifting twice a week or whatever those splits require.

At least beyond like 1.5pl8

Yeah
Squats are fucking hard and they're good to include because working hard is good and they're a useful movement for life but 15 sets of hard and especially heavy squats a week is absurd
Plus its pretty clear that newbies build strength on less than 3x a week, 1x is probably fine
I know the idea is that because the weight is light newbies also recover quickly but if they're genuinely going to failure (I was squatting to full failure with safeties even when I could only do 5x 1plate in the first stages of starting strength) its a lot to recover from in 48hrs
I dipped on SS for other stuff quickly and it was all because of squats, they've continued to progress even into intermediate with only 1 squat session a week and other leg work elsewhere
