Is it true that the only way to get big calves is to be heavy? It kind of makes sense because calves are an endurance muscle. Most people do like 10,000 "reps" of walking per day. Doing 20 reps of heavy calf raises shouldn't make a difference, but doing 10,000 steps with 50 lbs more weight should. It also seems like the only people with big calves are fatties and former fatties.

I spam loaded carries and weighted jumps and it's helped my calves quite a bit.

You're forgetting the third group of naturally big calves - autistic toe walkers. Calf raises are a waste of time. Barefoot running with a mid-frontfoot strike is the best way to train calves. I've said that multiple times, but /fit/ is allergic to running.

I was obsessed as a kid/teen but still walked tons with my friends. This resulted in massive calves. They are still freaks of nature and literally bigger than any other muscle I have

I have shitty calf genetics and found mine respond to climbing hills and torquing through your toes on the ERG. Like you said, volume. The rowing machine is cool cos your forearms respond in the same way and get similar results. I was able to develop cool mind muscle connection with my calf muscles can shred them on a short hill climb.
