Only someone who can't do Bulgarian split squats would think that. Most likely her inability to do those is the source of her consternation.

Do reverse lunges. That prevents overloading the active knee with over-striding. Once you've figured out your preferred lunge length, you can switch to forward lunges if you want, but I don't see the point.

I feel like the most common mistake that you see people make is lunging out way too far. despite the name of the exercise, it isn't about maximizing the length of your lunge extension. you want your torso to be moving basically straight down and then straight back up. this will also help prevent balance issues when you get the hang of it. also, if you're doing walking lunges, make sure you don't cheat yourself by starting the next rep on the way up, if that makes sense. if you have to reset your feet as you switch between legs, do that.

Doing lunges and not doing lunges instead of Bulgarian split squats so you're doing lunges instead of Bulgarian split squats is the equivalent of doing lunges and using the lats pull down machine instead of doing chin ups.
