Mainly because people never stop "progressing". I can't think of anything 400lb in nature that someone would need to lift that has a convenient 1" handle. Or a common situation where you need to squat or leg press 300lb.

So your argument is that exercise should be functional and lifting 400 pounds with a perfect bar is not functional.

You're strength doesn't evaporate just because it's not the exact same weight lifted in the exact same manner you fucking moron. We evolved to pick things up. Strengthening your back and hamstrings makes picking things up easier and lowers risk of injury.

This is what these guys fail to understand. Back pain is NOT normal and most people should avoid putting so much stress on their lower backs. It takes everything you have away and gives you nothing in return.
Legs are supposed to make you mobile, fast, agile and explosive. You can get there running/sprinting and doing some auxilliary exercises. Heavy squats and deadlifts on the other hands are a hoax that make you fat, unhealthy and ugly.

imo bodyweight squat variations like shrimp squat, pistol squat, bulgarian split squat, jump squat, sissy squats etc. are all very good for leg strength

Because you evolved to grow muscle when muscle is stressed. That doesn't mean your joints evolved to handle 400lb lifts and if they fail, you're fucked.

To a point, but pro athletes where physical exertion is used wear out their bodies. I put my money where my mouth is and do pretty light deadlifts and even lighter squats if I do them.

I lift at home and only have 127.5kg weights in total (280lbs) I have thought about buying more plates, but why would I? I have big legs anyway, and the strength after that point is unlikely to ever be practical. I'm just progressing my bench to that weight and I'll maintain. I squat and deadlift it already

I'm going to give you the biggest redpill of all.
You do not have to run.
Ever.
You never have to run.
You never have to jog.
Walking does all you need without destroying your joints.
Increase progressive overload by rucking. Start out with 10-15% of your body weight or you'll destroy your tendons like running would.
You'll build massive cardio and body muscle from doing just this.
Then you can do body weight squats, high volume.
You'll be fucking huge and all the bitches will want to slob your knob.
