A bit of a dumb question, but how can you tell when you're being lazy and when you truly need a break? Both mentally and physically. And I'm not talking just about working out.

you stop giving a fuck. Even good results don't improve mood. Instead of celebrating or feeling proud about stuff you just feel completely empty inside. You do the motions of going to work, lifting, etc. and immediately come home and rot alone for days straight.
In the gym you notice your stamina is shot. 3rd set feels 10x harder even after a rest day. Also the pump is suckier
All you can really do is go "fuck it" and hang out with friends, take a week off from lifting/studying, etc. Catch up whenever, it's not current you's problem.

Any good routine has breaks built in. It should be easy to be objective about if this is a special circumstance. If you need a break but canโ€™t articulate whatโ€™s special about why you need one given your current circumstances, itโ€™s probably laziness.

you only need a break if you're actually doing something productive. If you were a pathetic fuck and still are with nothing to show for it then you're just a lazy POS

I think it's one of those things that if you have to ask ...
Real answer would be to track your sleep week over week, but you need a high quality tracking device and account for factors like diet, alcohol, and travel.
If you've been on the grind for at least 8 weeks and feel worn out yeah take a week off and enjoy the last fumes of summer, Labor Day through Thanksgiving is the best time for a slow-controlled bulk anyways.
