If you look at the data, long-term partnerships typically sort along wealth and class lines.
Upper class men and women both tend to be lean with low body fat.
Lower class men tend to be big (either fat or muscular, details not particularly important). Lower class women tend to just mostly be fat.
This is supported by my own life experience. I grew up in a place with obesity levels near Mississippi. Almost all the women were fat, and they dated “big” guys, whether fat or muscular. It always annoyed me that guys who spent all their time at the gym still just ended up with the same fat women who didn’t take care of themselves.
I moved to the big city and made something of myself (front-office finance job), and now I have access to a pool of successful, fit women. When I look around at all their male partners, they are all lean. Every single one.
The only weightlifter/bodybuilder types are relegated to back office support roles. They do not have access to the beautiful, high-status women. At the end of the day, they take the train home to the suburbs, where their fat wife is waiting for them.
