Cats do that kind of bite as a "fuck OFF" kind of deal, which is fine because theyre moody and will cool off shortly
So when you bit him back, this was an escalation to him and he responded in kind. The "bite them back" theory is heavily debatable even for human children. Animals have no frame of reference for what youre trying to explain with that. Especially cats and other obligate carnivores.
