It's mostly cultural. It's in competitions and all the influencers do it so people who start lifting do. Bodybuilders who stopped being aesthetic 40 years ago maximize leg size so new lifters want to do that.

I do it a little just for strength, unloaded or 1pl8.

Unless you are a member of the short femur club, it can defintely take years to build a big squat.

I am 6'5" and really enjoy the challenge, but its a struggle for me to hit 500. Its been a long slow crawl - over a decade - to be able to hit 480. Im just not built for this lift. It alwys hurts, I am not strong, it feels awkward and I frequently tweak by bag, hammy, or adductor. But I do enjoy the challenge. I squat 2-3 times per week - frequency helps.

My only point is to agree that frequency is helpful in learning to become proficient in the squat, unless you are geentically gifted in the squat, which I am not. That was the point of this post, I thought.

Yeah I live on the fucking moon and I don't know humans squat 600+lb. That literally cripples them and they can't do regular activities like walk briskly or wear pants.

For strength as opposed to size. Functional strength like moving around, using legs, actually squatting in real life. Also I'm not a squat dwarf who could do 3pl8 untrained just because of dwarven geometry.
