Watch those "my gigantic fat bitch 8000 pound XXL wife" shows for inspiration, they're actually great for that.
It's pretty easy to notice the pattern of which kind of people actually end up succeeding and what kind don't and also to learn the psychological profile of a food addicted person. By rebutting their excuses, you can sort of learn what is wrong with you and learn some of the basic moves the mental side of food addiction uses on you.
The person in this picture for example is selectively looking at past events and has a very short time horizon for her thinking. Instead of talking about larger patterns, she picks out a single example, which while probably happened, is not representative of the rest of her eating behavior. You can learn to avoid that trap in yourself by keeping a journal and relying on it instead of your own feelings or memory. Addicts tend to live on a very short time-scale.
For the trend of who succeeds and who doesn't, the answer is pretty clear. People who are internally motivated succeed 100x more than the people who are externally motivated. Outside factors like not reaching your target weight in time are huge setbacks for EM people and will ruin the whole process, but just par for course for IM people and will not even shake them long term. External motivation just doesn't really cut it if you have to keep on dieting for 3+ years in most cases.
