My theory is that steroids increase strength gains, but they also fluff up your muscles.
That's how guys like this who look like string beans can outlift steroid monkies.
Lifetime of lifting and healthy living = dense, strong muscles
Few years of lifting and steroid use = fluffy, less strong muscles

Good point. I don't like soft and squishy things, so I'll probably stay natty then. Could you post body and PRs just in case though? I'd like to make sure that I can trust your theory.

You're just thinking of creatine. It's water binding. People on steroids are rarely on just the one thing.
People who cross train tend to get more hypertrophy of type 1 fibers as opposed to mostly type 2 hypertrophy which makes them look a bit more sinewy but it mostly contributes endurance rather than strength.

My theory is you are an idiot. Training for strength and training for hypertrophy have a lot of crossover, but ultimately, they are two different things. That said, a lot of steroids will increase plasma volume.

that's why my dad always told me bodybuilder muscles are all for show. when the going gets tough you want a working man on your side with muscles built from a lifetime of hard functional work, not big useless muscles that are only good for showing off

Idk how to break this to you but bodybuilders are strong. Ever since China btfo'd the planet in Olympic lifting everyone has been copying their methods. Which is mostly bodybuilder style lifting to maximize hypertrophy on every individual head of a muscle they can then doing volume consolidations and intensity increases pre competition to peak on recruitment and consequently strength. "Strength" in the big lifts and in a functional capacity is more of a practiced skill that's celing is limited by the amount of muscle you have.

Not really about steroid use. What you’re describing is actually the difference between myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. It all comes down to the training regimen. Ever heard of the construction worker or farmer who can match the strength of any gym rat, yet without the same muscle size?
