/fat/ - Fat Loss General
>Who is /fat/ for?
For Marbled Mammoths, working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).

It's 10:19 PM. I was about to binge hard because my weight hasn’t gone down at all for the past three days. I weighed myself while plating up what would’ve been a massive dinner, and I was up a full kilo. The old me would’ve said, β€œScrew it,” and eaten 3,000 calories just to cope, thinking it didn’t matter anymore. But not tonight. Instead, I’m going to buy some cigarettes, then take my dog for a long walk. WAGMI.

I broke my fast yesterday with 1 medium tortilla, 2 slices of cheese and some pork, and I ate nothing else yesterday. i can handle it just fine if i eat on my own schedule and make my own food at home. the issues come when my family brings home fast food which is almost always leaves me going over my intake even if i wasnt fasting. i was on track for a 2+ day fast starting tuesday and ending up breaking it wednesday for that exact reason.

Exactly right bro, tho just start fasting, or even just restricting calories RIGHT NOW. You NEED to accept your failures and learn from em. Losing weight is long fucking process and everyone will have setbacks. Do not throw away the whole week because of couple of bad days. I was 155kg when I was the heaviest I was, now I'm under 100kg. Fasting makes you lose electrolytes, drinking lots of water can also flush more out. Lightheadedness is a common symptom. So yeah, you need to keep on top of that if you try it again. Sipping on a big jug of water with electrolytes in it throughout the day is probably the easiest method.

You can reduce calories even further or increase activity. Fasting works too. The last 10 pounds will be the hardest.

Possibly, yeah. My favorite that's long-lasting is pumpernickel, but while I've seen it sold in plenty of spaces, I can count on one hand the amount of times I've seen genuine one outside of germany, a good 95% seem to be fake ones with colorings, which I find are barely batter than generic bread. Whatever is full grain is good, then get the darkest uncolored bread you can still enjoy.

>What do you do for better sleep while on a deficit
That really depends on what your issue is, falling asleep, waking up, etc.
I'm blessed in that I have fairly good sleep, but anything that you'd suggest for normal sleep hygiene is probably good:
Restrict blue light before going to be, ideally no devices within some time before sleeping (read a book or something), ventilate the room before sleeping. I also sleep much better if the room is ever so slightly cool, but that's a subjective thing. Consider doing some exercise if you don't get enough to power yourself out and take a nice shower before sleeping. Try not to use your bed for anything but sleeping (reading books is okay, ideally you do even that somewhere else though) and make your bed in general nice.
Nutrition wise try to eliminate the stuff that makes sleeping harder, mostly hunger and satiety, while I'm on a fairly steep deficit (about 1.5 kgs/week), I don't feel much hunger. I attribute that to low calorie density veggies, together with some protein. Think anything related to cabbages (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage) and other low calorie density (peppers, tomato, zucchini, aubergine). I do low carb, but if you don't consider potatoes, they are fairly satiating for me. I like to eat stews, woks, etc. The goal is a large volume for medium calories.
Lastly, don't underestimate the power of liquid, both in satiety and wellbeing. A nice tea (not black or green) before bed helps for example, though that's balanced by how much more likely that makes you to have to go to bed in the night.
Good luck!

Have you fasted before? It might take time and experience for some people to do multi day fasts. Electrolytes etc. might also help some, even at the first few days. There is no shame in stopping a fast if you feel truly bad, just eat a little, feel better and start a new fast and try again. Also, switching to a low carb diet for couple of days before a fast will most likely help.
Even 1 day of fasting is pretty good, if you cant do multi day fasts try doing alternate day fasting, might be easier for some. I might switch to ADF from multi day fasts after losing ~5kg since I'm getting quite lean and longer fasts are getting harder.

That seems like the only realistic way that's both easily scalable, effective and happens to also increase quality of life.
Ozempic in the water supply would be expensive as shit and influence people who don't need it too, so that's not an option.

You're entitled to your own opinion of course, all I want is the choice.
I want to be able to live in a (nice) walkable city, as I find that nicer than in suburban hell where my kids can't leave the house without neighbors calling cps on me, I have to drive them everywhere because nothing is nearby, not even a store or soccer practice or whatever else they want, and they can't see their friends without having to ask me first and me having the time.
You on the other hand should be able to live in your suburban castle, free from the filth of the inner cities, with more nature and less noise pollution, where you can have a big yard and be left alone.

A big factor here is probably that I'm european, our cities aren't as fucked as yours, so I won't have to tell my kids what a fent junkie looks like, there aren't stabbings on public transport regularly (not bri'ish either) and in general social trust is higher (for now). Also of course I'm culturally raised to put less value in having that american dream of suburbia, which probably changes things.
I've lived both though, big house in relatively rural area and small-ish flat in city and I like a smaller flat in a nice city more than the alternative, though that's better than a flat (even a big one) in a shit city.
The only gripe I have is in america suburbia being cashflow negative. If you want to live there, you have to pay to do so, the inner city shouldn't have to subsidize the outer areas. That's another off-topic rant though, so I'll leave it at that.
>How about instead we just destroy all cities entirely and let everyone work in small scale agriculture

I can almost, ALMOST do a pull-up bros
on my walks I've been eyeing up sturdy-looking trees that I'm going to do pullups from. Just you wait you fucking piece of shit trees. Women are going to be like "woah who's that guy busting out all the pull-ups? He's clearly not fat and probably not on the autism spectrum either. I should have sex with him immediately"

Just keep at it bro, after you unlock your first pull-up the progress is insane. Haven't played around with machines since I only lift at home but nothing activates my lats like chins. I can only do around 8 strict reps at ~100kg bw, but fuck I love how it feels on my lats. I do wonder how many reps I need to be able to do to achieve a muscle up, thats my next goal.

I’ve been making this pasta sauce using some tomato paste and a couple spoonfuls of cream cheese and a puree onion, it tastes delicious and it’s only 290 calories a serving. The majority of my meals are still lean cuisines because I just don’t feel like spending a bunch of time doing meal prep but it’s nice to have a meal every once in a while that isn’t microwave slop. I’m down to 288 now from 411. I still got another hundred pounds to go but I feel like I’m in the home stretch, and honestly it hasn’t been a struggle at all. That’s not to say I didn’t have to sacrifice anything, let’s be real here, if you actually want to lose the weight you absolutely cannot do cheat days. It was my birthday last week and I didn’t eat any of my own birthday cake because I knew one slice would throw off my numbers for the whole day. Did it look weird? Of course it did, but that’s what you have to do.

If you really want to lose weight you have to want to, if you keep thinking it’ll suddenly get easier or you’ll be able to start being β€œnormal” again I’m sorry but that’s just not gonna happen. I don’t care personally, I’d much rather live like this than go back to how I was back in January.

Heh, I consider myself an alcoholic, before I used to drink every single day when the next day was free. I was for a long time without drinking when I was losing the majority of my fat (around 40kg), my life was the same as if I was drinking or not. If you have NOTHING in your life when you are an alcoholic, you will have NOTHING in your life even if you are NOT an alcoholic.

I'm pretty sure people who see positive changes from stopping alcohol have something that motivates them to be better for others than themselves, like their family, so they feel so much better when they are finally doing as they "should" do. Losers like me without a life wont see much of an improvement when quitting alcohol (other than the obvious weight loss), unless you really are completely fucked and your liver is failing.

Would you look at that, I need to go make myself another drink. Cheers bros, lets get lean, yeah?

posted this in the other thread but here is an update

>got injured
>went from 210 at 6ft 1 to 230 (was an avid lifter prior to injury)
>desperate to get strong again
>after 6 months of recovery dedicate all my time to strength again
>bench was down to 250 went back to 325
>deadlift went up almost 100lbs to 505

But I got fat, which is meh, I have gotten a little soft for football before, but this time, I had disgusting and painful pregnancy stretchmarks.

Doesn't matter what you lift if you ruin your physique. I hit 275 at only 6ft 1. I would work in a Chinese resturant (A friend got me hired and they were flexible with college) and they would send me home with a pint of general tso's or spare ribs, I would pick up some carbs, smash a lift, and have a protein shake.

I am down 20lbs to 255 and my stretchmarks are a living testament to my gluttony. I am a "big' guy as in I have abs in the mid 190s to low 200s, but I did not need to push 300lbs to bench 3 plates.

I am 26 so I am youngish for skin recovery, dropping the weight ASAP, and got prescription cream (tritrentinoin or whatever) so I hope my aesthetics will recover in a year or two.

I regret ever listening to SS and the Mark Rippletoe memes that 6ft 1 men need to be 250 or more lbs.

I am 20 pounds down, part of it was fasting so glycogen/shit dump, strength has taken a hit. i can only bench 225 for 11 instead of 15. I think it was to do more with the lack of glycogen and no carbs than anything else.

I stopped working at the resturant and now work at a gym as a lifegaurd. 4 8 hour shifts, 30 minutes on stand, 30 minutes off. I try and walk laps around the pool for the entirety of my 4 hours on the stand. Day 1 I walked barefoot on the wet concrerte which caused blisters so now I am double socking it with shoes and still have gotten at least 2 hours of walking in while they heal.

My muscles in my quads and glutes are revealing themselves more.I am still disgusted with myself though.

in the past 2 weeks i completed both a 5 day and a 3 day snake juice fast.

I did get a coach, and he advised me if I was serious about agressive cutting to at least keep the protein up to try and keep as much muscle as I can.

So the days I do eat I have about 2 packs of ground turkey for like 900kcal and 200grams of protein, or a shake with about 1300kcal and 200grams of protein.

Obvioulsy I am overweight and have alot of fuel to burn so I feel okay either fasting or the high protein meal. I am poor so the turkey meal is about 14 bucks which is rough.

My problem was I didn't know how to do anything more than that, I couldnt take the next step to get involved in anything. So I just went to where there were people, and kinda just wandered around pretending I belonged there. Eventually I got depressed again, and started going out less and spending more time on couch again eating all the shit food I'd managed to avoid for the best part of 12mths. I don't know how to be social, I don't like talking to people because after the initial confident 'hello, how's things?' I got nothing, and its embarrassing. If only learning social skills and being interesting was as simple as not eating.
