How can I not feel pathetic about never running marathons?
I am actually a gymbro but I love running. I run 5km and 10km races. However, I feel totally pathetic about that because nowadays everyone is running half marathons, marathons and even ultra marathons.
I perform ok at my races, usually placing top 20% even with gym being my main focus. It doesn't mean anything though. Like if I am on a date with a girl I can never talk about me running because only the word "marathon" is attractive, especially if she is also a runner. 5km and 10km distances are just pathetic.

running is boring and fucks up your joints. try cycling instead

I ran two marathons and a couple half marathons. Preparing for a marathon is SO not worth it unless you're super passionate about it.
I think you're so insecure about it because running clubs have gotten a lot of traction recently that of course draw females in and women are naturally at advantage bc they're usually pretty light.
Marathon is not something you could or should casually bust out, it needs a lot of prep time and generates a high risk of overuse injuries. You could use up that time for VO2maxxing, strength training, power training and so on to make yourself a truly fit athlete, but you sacrifice all that for bragging rights that come with a marathon, dunno if it's a fair deal.

Running a marathon isn’t even actually good for you. It’s the most meme thing ever.

There’s really no reason to ever run beyond 5mi in a single stint. It’s a useless skill.

I run 2-3mi at high intensity every other week. The in-between weeks I do a sprints day. No reason to do anymore than that.

in day to day life that amount of cardio probably comes in handy more often than weight training desu

Just do it man. If you can run a 10k, you can train up for a half marathon in like 2 months. Fulls are take it or leave it. I like them. I like the training. I like getting up to 20 mile long runs, but I totally understand how it just gets boring to some people.

Literally when you fucking retard? I carry shit all the time at my job. I literally never have had to run 5mi+ in my day-to-day life.

Look, I ran a marathon before and it was kinda fun, then Dave Pascoe came around becoming basically the Grandpa Goatis of ultramarathoning saying don't do this shit.

At first I was a little skeptical, but then this shit dropped saying it might be an ass carcinogen...

it's a very specific type of cardio that has little carry over beyond steady jogging on an even terrain
regular day to day occurrences are more about vo2 max

Hi anon, runner here. Truth about marathons you see on social media is most people run/walk them and do shit times. It's not some amazing feat it's just about turning up and taking selfies. I've only ever run 5k (17:20), 10k (37:50) and a HM (1h23) and would never even consider running a full marathon unless I had a proper training block and a concrete goal like sub-3 hours.
tl;dr it's a meme

I'll weigh in as well as someone who likes to run but doesn't want to race marathon distance: if you want to run really good times for 5k and 10k you already need to be running most every day, doing speed work, tempo, all the stuff that makes running workouts interesting. You're still hitting that weekly mileage, reaping the gains, and it's impossible to get fat. But racing a 5k or 10k can be done like weekly or biweekly without all the cns strain. So I run 50-60 mpw, enjoy the cardio benefits, enjoy the mental clarity, but race a distance that's over in 40 minutes max and feel good enough to go about the rest of my day. Simultaneously the people you read about doing "marathon running" are just death shuffling for 5 plus hours, running like 20mpw to "train" so they're not really reaping the benefits and only dealing with the negatives.

TL;DR marathon running is a meme for normies, focus on running how you like to and race shorter distances to keep your CNS ready to continue doing what you like, which is running presumably.

Long endurance training of any type can actually have a protective effect on your joints

U would say casually cycling would fuck up your joints more than casually running due to constant tension
