For anyone who has done a martial art

Is it normal to have mixed emotions about it?

None of the stuff I've tried (Boxing, Judo, Wrestling, BJJ)

Has made me instantly think "omg I love this. This is it. I'm doing this for life"

It's usually a combination of "well that was really difficult and tiring, is this worth it, this is going to be difficult but I'll be a better person mentally and physically, I guess.. just stick with it?"

Or were you instantly hooked

That's how it is. You just find a sport that you can actually tolerate and stick with it.

Chasing a Holy grail of "I fucking love it and I wanna do it everyday" leaves you nowhere.

Godspeed, anon

Yeah I figured. I mean when people ask me how it is, I say "good" but what I really mean Is "awful"

it hurts, it's sweaty, it's dirty. If you learn to tolerate that, then everything else is easy

Just give it more time, see which one you wanna go to more and you’ll overlook the downsides in time. I tried muay thai, mma and bjj and mostly stuck with muay thai cuz I liked it the most and had no injuries besides some blisters. Grappling fucked up my shoulders, back and knee so I dropped it.

literally from the first moment I saw Muay Thai I knew it was for me. I got recommended Buakow v Skarbowsky on YouTube and immediately watched as many matches I could find them found a gym near me and signed up the next day.
>14 years later still in love
now bjj on the other hand is mega gay and I hate it but made it to blue belt just for self defense purposes. but I hated every class, and was worried about injury the entire time

For self defense I prefer mma since it teaches you how to stand up and get people off you. Bjgay teaches you how to missionary sorry I mean guard and keep the man on top.

I didn't mention but I was the world's shittiest wrestler in middle school, so I already understand how to stand up. I lost every single match ever but normies cannot hold me down.
I agree though, but finding a good MMA gym can be difficult.
Rugby, American Football, and basketball if you are large are also good at teaching this.

I never stuck with anything more than a few months in my whole life
except 4chan
I've been here since '08
lifting too I guess but I always change my style of training or routine

I've trained martial arts for most of my life now, and competed in kickboxing/MT and no-gi grappling. I still don't know that I love it. It's really good training, it's hard, you learn a lot. At its best it can be very fun, especially if you're with a good crew.
But that's like most exercise. I don't always like it, I just do it anyway. I would say only like a third of my gym sessions feel awesome. The rest are either fine or good.

If you've got ADHD, do Balintawak. The Palakaw drill is a fucking dopamine rush.
It's basically a high-speed physical questionnaire that adjusts so that you are always just on the edge of your capabilities. It massages the ADHD brain in just the right spot.

For me yes but the problem has always been that where i live these sports aren't popular so the gyms quality outside few big cities is quite low.

we are probably similar
I love the idea of doing things and like to research and plan and prepare and then maybe one day do the thing
and then it gets old fast, even though I progress quickly and people always get surprised by how good I'm getting
then I quit in like a month or two
I want to get into Judo (I used to do it but realized I dont like it) because I love the aesthetic of it and wish I could be a black belt beast who can just throw anyone with ease
but then it means actually grabbing dudes and hugging them and being thrown and doing jumping jacks and shit

Why not just learn to use weapons instead? No wars in human history were ever fought unarmed.
You'll have a clear advantage over all the martial arts fags since none of them will have any idea how to counter your attacks. A lot of the martial arts that people swear by come from turd world loser countries anyway like Thailand and Brazil.
Also hi Alex.

Second day of wrestling practice, I learned to do a suplex, just because I asked about it. Then I realized the strategy that comes with grappling and my theorycrafting autism took over.

It shouldn't be awful but it also isn't going to be amazing. It should be a decent gratification by the end of a session.

I like to teach myself most martial arts shit as ive come up with a ton of shit that i dont really see. I wish i could go to some mma gyms to spar but im working too much right now and always sleep in.

I think its best to practice way way more than sparring, plus you dont wanna go in there where they can bully you jf they want you legit have to be able to take a punch and destroy someone if they pull some shit. Nobody pulls the gas them out then beat on them for real vs mike tyson theyd treat him with a little more respect.

So basically you don't like fighting but for meme reasons you feel obliged to learn martial arts. Incel problems.

Sure, but I rest my case.
A samurai with a sword is going to destroy a samurai without a sword.
Also if you go to an mma gym you'll be forced to hang out with niggers. With Hema or Kendo you'll get a newfound appreciation for history as well, whereas by doing other martial arts the only culture will be that of the niggerloving amerisharts.

You should train what you will likely need.

Knights trained riding and fighting in full armor because while it was possible they were caught naked sometime, the most likely way they'd fight was in full armor.

You usually don't go out armed and armored, so it makes sense to learn how to fight unarmed and unarmored.
Which is also why the typical mix of muay thai and no gi BJJ is probably not so great for self defense because in all likelihood you will fight while wearing shoes and clothes on concrete, so your training should reflect that. For example, exchange MT for Savate, where you learn how to kick while wearing shoes. No Gi BJJ with trad BJJ because they grapple in clothes. And so on.

Spiked gauntlets were a thing with knights, im sure some of them had some fancy lifting shit or something since gyms were invented by the greeks.

Plus pommels, larger handled zweihanders in particular as polearns also were used as staffs im sure. Itd be sick to see how brutal and different the combat would be with so much metal cloth and leather made to absorb impacts as warhammers and maces became popular in the middle ages/rennaissance.

If i had to choose one style to main itd be a halbred+warhammer/shield or buckler depending on large scale vs knight v knight as the standard for footsoldiers was just a spear and shield afaik.

But i think wrestling and more modern pancrates/boxing was probably what knights were using as itd be much more difficult to use kickboxing in full armor but im sure a few bright individuals figured out they could use their legs in a fight.

Finding a stick in a bush or a metal pipe or a rock you can throw isn't difficult at all though, you can easily do it.

Idk if full armor would be beneficial in every situation, the most effective troops were often light/partial armor and a zweihander, using it to break up pike formations mainly and for the main force to get into the corners after the flank.
>often reverse grip for torque 1 or 2 pikemen
>now you can get them in the unarmored part as your middle formation keeps theirs at bay

In a duel light armor was common but i think germania originated heavy armor and Maximilian whatever theres a movie depicting one of his duels. And knights would often basicslly duel on the battlefield as a show of pride or just to make sure their main force isnt taken out since heavy knights cant outrun light mounted cavalry thats both what heavy knights were made to defeat with a regular army and were defeated by when singled out with otto I vs hungary and france vs ottomans respectively.

And full armor was often used to decimate forces with cavalry charges, so the weapons would be different. Its well known that knights would often dismount as archers and knight v knight, thats what made light armor horse archers so successful for a while samurai and english could not use their longbow on a horse and often didnt have the armored horses unless later english war horses idk about samurai armored horses their armor was different because you cant make the same shit like stilettos or spikes with japanese steel, samurai did have konobos probably vs samurai and naginata(spear) was the most common weapon paired with katana/wakazashi/long handle katana and a tanto(dagger).

The zweihander is interesting for hakf swording, it had another crossguard just for it and often ornate handguards like a rapier or some chinese swords iirc. But they were basically a spear for close range, very light, and the extra crossguard of course used for blocking and parrying, inwanna say some had sword catchers on it too probably for getting in vs a halbred or spear.

Flails are where knight v knight gets interesting, as they would wrap around shields AND are hard to deal with vs a knight with a 2 handed weapon. Halbreds are sick and my favorites have a spike and a warhammer on the sides and a spearhead, many french ones had a crescent blade and lighter as a lot of knight armor has no armor on the calves/knees or is thin plated and easy to dent/immobilize. The most succesful regular army with halbreds are the swiss who were notoriously difficult to deal with as heavy cavalry became popular.
