/fat/ - fat loss general:
For pumpkin pullers working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice. Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/ - Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

I'm 5'11" male (male), I'd say my TDEE is probably around 2500. I just eat at 2000 calories and increase my steps, using a step counter on my phone. I planned to do 10k steps a day but it's working out to only be 8k, which is fine. I don't like to go less than 2k cals so if I wanted to lose faster I'd just increase my steps. I'm also lifting in the gym 4 times a week but dropped volume to 2 sets per exercise and I haven't lost any strength.

I use MyFitnessPal to count calories. I don't think I'd be able to do it without that. The barcode-scanner thing is a godsend.

Hmm what else. I guess I'd also mention I allow myself a treat every now and then, so like if I've been strict for like 2-3 weeks then I'll allow myself a pizza or something for one day. I don't go above maintenance calories though.

Also what allows me to be strict is the knowledge that I'm only doing it for 3 months. This time I actually thought even that feels too long so next time I bulk I'm not going to go as heavy, so my cut will only last 2 months instead of 3.

what exactly do you want to hear, retard?
try making a diet plan that has less than 5% of the calories from saturated fat. I'll give you a hint: it's impossible with meat, because even fucking tuna and chicken breast has too much saturated fat for that.
Then take it to it's logical conclusion and ask if you think a vegetarian diet is healthy, and that 99.99% of the people in the world are eating unhealthy diets, or if the "experts" are full of shit.

you can stay the same weight while thinning down as long as you're a newbie lifter and gain enough muscle to offset fat loss.

Mostly cope, but can be true. A motivated individual can lose about 2lbs of fat a week, a similarly motivated individual can gain about 2lbs of muscle in a month. Its significantly easier to lose fat than it is to gain muscle so rarely will they even out, but it can happen. Track something other than your weight, like arm, neck, and waist circumference to see if you're still moving in the right direction.

Honestly, just take whatever number it gives you with a grain of salt. If you use the number and you can't lose weight or you're losing weight but it's dropping way more than it should, then you should recalibrate. I found that for myself it was pretty decent, even though I also lifted weights 3x/week and that's probably not considered "sedentary" anymore. I probably fucked up my calorie counting somewhere but it still evened out to a very good rate of progress.

I've been really going hard losing the weight since early September. Trying to go from 210 to the lower end of the 170's by the end of the year. Hovering around 189-190 at the moment. Initially I was much stricter with the diet but I'm allowing myself more enjoyable food given my exercise load and pretty extreme deficit (1600 cals). Going to stay adherent for these next two weeks and try to break into 170s by Thanksgiving and be down to the goal by the New Year. Done this before in the realm of 190's down to 150's four years ago in about 16 weeks (similar time frame to now).

How much water weight can you hold?
>Pretty lean
>Ate at very big deficit nearly all week
>Like 800 calories total a day monday-friday
>Saturday and sunday are carb-filled disasters with birthday cakes and sandwiches
>Tried to not go overboard and didn't eat normally on top of that
>Gained 0.1kg
Experience tells me I shouldn't be worried, but because I weigh myself only once a week I'm left with the feeling that the last week was a total waste of effort now.
Luckily this upcoming weekend is the first in like 3 or 4 months where nothing happens, so I'm in complete control this week.

Water weight can depend on a multitude of things.
Carbs require water for your body to process, so if you eat a lot of carbs, your body will hold onto water (Or carb-heavy food will be more watery than other foods) and as a consequence.

Inaccurate napkin math would be like
>600g of carbs.
>230g~ of glycogen.
>Body needs about 3x the amount of water to digest glycogen.
>Body will retain 600-1kg of water.

This is all super approximate and you shouldn't really use this for anything other than a thought of how this stuff vaguely works. But, essentially a week is too short of a time to really inform you as to how much weight you're losing because metabolism works on a longer timespan than all that.

Yooo, I struggled with losing weight my entire life and alcoholism seriously heavily through the last decade before I actually got sober and lost weight.
It was about a handle a day for the better part of the decade leading up the decision.
Weirdly enough, it wasn’t kidney failure (and in turn dialysis), multiple detoxes, seizures, ruined personal relationships or wrecked cars cars that actually got me to successfully stop drinking 24/mother fucking 7.
It was counting calories.
Actually counting the calories I consumed super diligently, weighing all my food and being crazy anal retentive about it really made me take a beat to consider the booze.
A single serving/an airplane bottle of vodka was 100 calories and I’d need about 12 of those to get actually drunk (tolerance is a motherfucker).
I still drink every once in a while, because being 100% sober sounds like a hellish life to me.
Every sober person I know is basically just constantly talking about how they miss it in one way or another.
But practicing the virtue of self control for so long (it took a couple years to lose the weight) actually instilled some into me.
It’s miraculous, honestly.
Tackling the two together works really, really well.
Sometimes it’s what people who have been struggling with both need.
I wish you the best of luck, anon.
Get a kitchen scale and seriously measure all your food.
Go for walks and listen to music if you feel hungry, I couldn’t do anything sedentary like watch media or play vidya, it was instrumental in keeping me from breaking.
Idk how much you’re drinking but if you’re at risk of DTs/seizures definitely taper off, but if you haven’t been drinking heavily every single day for the last year, you should be okay.
Let me know if you have any questions, I’ll check the thread again later.
Godspeed, homie.

Honestly when I do drink every once in a while it’s strictly socially and only ever three or four beers (I call it the β€œthree or four beer rule,” I know how plebbit that sounds).
Not only does total abstinence sound like hell, but it also has a tendency to deter actual accountability.
People slip up inevitably and then use it as an excuse to act a fucking fool because either β€œthey already fucked up, what does it matter” or β€œthey’re no longer responsible for any decisions they make because muh alcoholism,” thanks to AA.
That was one of my biggest issues with AA, in addition to being one big pity party circlejerk, also VEHEMENTLY discourage true accountability, because they preach that alcohol is a terrible devil juice that causes people to do awful things and (here’s the big one) they’re completely powerless over it.
That’s one of the things they make you say over and over again every time you go, you must admit that you’re literally powerless over alcohol and it’s terrible properties, and that the things you do while inebriated are not your fault because of it.
I believe that everything is a conscious choice, and I take responsibility for the things I’ve done under the influence, because I made that choice.
Nothing takes that ability away from me, despite alcohol compromising the decision making part of your brain to a degree.
I get it, some people really do need to live a completely dry life- but that’s because they have no self control.
I had an astounding lack of it myself, but I managed to buckle down and teach myself through practicing the most difficult situation anyone with a drinking problem will face, which is when to say β€œI’m good, no more for me.”
I have many, many friends that are still trying to quit drinking and not a single one has been successful other than my buddy’s dad.
They all relapse eventually and then go on a bender, then start over.
I just mastered self control, which was hard.

something I've been making quite a bit is:
1lbs ground chicken breast / ground turkey
cook in pan with a little bit of japanese bbq sauce (1 or 2 tbsp is only 35-70cal)
Served over ~200cal of rice
red pepper flakes, sesame seeds
can add in broccoli florets or half an avocado sliced up.
Comes out to 600-800 calories and makes 2 servings. Quick, easy, plenty of protein, and it tastes decent.

It sucked. I started at 140. It took a little over 4 months, and I did keto / fasting. I wasn't totally committed to losing all of the weight and kept telling myself I was recomping, so I had weeks where I didn't lose any weight, felt like shit about my body, and then went hard on fasting, which was terrible mentally. Fasting works, but it fucking sucks.
I am very happy with the amount of muscle I gained and my strength has improved considerably, but I'm still not satisfied with how my body looks and I seriously hope I never have to lose that much weight again without glps.

Put the fork down. It's that simple. A little less than a year ago, my brother started not eating at work and only eats when he comes home after work, he was never much of a morning eater anyways, so that worked well enough for him, and he's currently lost like 30-40 kilos, or something. And he was a giga fatty before. Just by basically not eating for the first eight hours of his day. In his defense, he works for a furniture company where he lugs heavy couches around all day, but still.
