This is a great question.
The muscular, lean phenotype is not unknown. Plenty of tropical, primitive people have low levels of bodyfat with decent musularity. Yes, some are bone thin, but others have "athletic" levels of muscularity. So its not like that version of a strong, healthy look is completely unknown to the natural world.
Away from the tropics, I would assume that larger, heavier but muscular bodies with higher bodyfat would be preferable and more desirable. Large, strong men with decent bodyfat would be better providers and protectors. So I can see why big strong bodies w 20% bodyfat would be inherently attractive. This seems to hold true today. Im big enough to look like I lift in clothing, even in a sportscoat, and women frequently comment.
But actual bodybuilder (freaky muscle, feaky lowfat) physiques seem so unnatural that it could only be an example of jewelry or ornamentation causing women to look. That its a cutural/social thing like tattoos, or hairstyles or other ornaments, that there is no real reaosn to like, other than its a demonstration of status and wealth. Nick Walker looks like shit but Im sure hes gets bitches who like his freaky look.
