What people don't realize, or misinterpret quite often is the "placebo effect".
The idea behind placebo effect isn't that you "imagined the effect and made yourself believe the outcome" but that your belief actually had physical effect on the body.
Your mind literally can, with enough belief, do a lot of physical alteration. Your mind can create chemicals and your whole body to its believed sense.
Same goes with nocebo (the negative effects of your beliefs). If you are fearful of getting cancer you are at bigger odds of getting cancer. Your beliefs literally shape your body.
My hypothesis is that the mentally imagining muscle contractions increases neural drive, bdnf and wiring of the muscles, especially in the motor cortex of the brain (the one designed for actually moving the muscles).
Imagining is same as real world for the brain, so it will fire the same neurons, just a tad bit weaker.
