It's his own fault for using a stupid recursive acronym instead of a normal sounding name for his OS.

Hurd is based on Mach. GNU committing to their original plans for a kernel would have been far more humiliating.

What exactly makes GNU an operating system on its own? It's entirely possible to use Linux without GNU (see Alpine).

Its not very catchy. "Windows" "Apple" are things, real words, and follow a cadence of number of syllables. "GNU" "systemD" or making a correct acronym "GLS" or "LGS" or "SLG" are all unpronounceable jargon. Real people do not like that. Only "Linux" is the closes intelligible word of the bunch.

It's also possible to use GNU without Linux

What About Other Kernels?

Stallman's point becomes even clearer when you consider that GNU works with kernels other than Linux, like:

GNU Hurd (GNU’s own kernel)

FreeBSD kernel (in Debian GNU/kFreeBSD)

This proves that the userland can be used independently of the Linux kernel, reinforcing that “GNU” is more than just a set of tools glued to Linux.

You probably use amazing GNU tools like gcc and nano every day and take it for granted. Stallman fought a war for your freedom and this is how you thank him?

Yes, be someone that everyone on /g/ knows about.
>work your ass off to make an open-source operating system free for everyone
Sounds like a good goal.
>some asshat writes the kernel just before you finish writing the OS
This is a bad faith statement. HURD was nowhere near being finished when Linux was released.
>>the entire project is named after the kernel and you get no credit
Why do you know the name Stallman if that's the case? Also if his goal was for there to be an open-sourse OS free for everyone, and not fame, then the goal was achieved far sooner than if the world had to wait on Georgie R. R. Stallman to finish it.
Sounds like Stallman's goal wasn't noble or pure but rather a desire to be a world famous technohippie. He still got that fame but apparently not at the level desired. The stated goal of a FOSS OS however was achieved beyond anyone's wildest dreams. And you're still butthurt for some reason.

GCC is garbage and comes with a standard library that's pozzed by the license (rendering it less free for the developers than MSVC), and nano is absolute shit and micro is better.
I would love to see a viable GCC replacement so Linux could finally be free.

MIT and BSD are free, GNU is not. I can accept GPLv2 as a niche but definitely not suitable for most free software in 2k25. Anything newer than GPLv2 is literally a result of severe schizophrenia.

No actually freedom is when anybody can do whatever they want with it, forever. Most free software is like that in 2k25, which is pretty cool. I get to use a bunch of cool shit.

>MIT and BSD are free
Free to be corporate cuckslaves.
>But sitting there, quietly powering masses of the internet, without saying boo to a goose, is FreeBSD. And the companies using it? They’re not talking about it. Why? Because they don’t have to. The simple fact that dawned on me is FreeBSD’s gift to us all, yet Achilles heel to itself, is its license.
>Unlike the GPL, which requires you to share derivative works, the BSD license doesn’t. You can take FreeBSD code, build on it, and never give anything back. This makes it a great foundation for products — but it also means there’s little reason for companies to return their contributions.
