>>105564669 (OP) virtually every other word in the entire English language that starts with "gi" makes a hard G sound, give, gill, girl, gift, gild. The only word I can think of that doesn't is gist.
>>105564951 There's "giant," "gigantic," "giraffe," "ginormous," "gibberish," and maybe others. I do think you're right that most "gi" words have a hard g sound, but there are a bunch of exceptions.
>>105565011 Fair enough, but still, gif is an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format, it makes little to no sense to pronounce it as jif, the creator is just being a contrarian.
>>105565050 Which is why the acronym SCUBA is said 'scuh-buh' right? Because the U is for underwater? Or the S and E in LASER makes us pronounce it as 'layseer'.
I've always pronounced it with a hard 'g', maybe due to association for the word 'graphics'. I don't know if that's correct or not and I don't care. Hearing people pronounced it 'jif' like the peanut butter brand sounds dumb to me, though.

I've never once heard someone pronounce "graphics" like "jraphics". Jiff seems the most sane for the acronym.

>>105564669 (OP) The same way I pronounce gnome, gentoo, github, and graft. G-if.
>>105564669 (OP) I pronounce it like "gift" because I like the mental imagery of sending someone a gif as being similar to sending a gift. All that other shit about what the acronym stands for or what the creator intended I don't care for, prescriptivists can suck my chode.

>>105564669 (OP) The creator is a retard who needs to be raped and then beheaded. Just because he made a file format doesn't mean he has a say on linguistics.
