OK, real talk. Why can't Europe build their own ecosystems? Europe is FULLY dependent on Apple, Google and Microsoft. If you are living in EU their (((digitization))) efforts mean that you can't do anything without an Apple or Google phone on the go and all government interactions better be in .docx.
>inb4 we will just (((regulate))) them
You europoors simply don't have the cards. EU needs American tech firms more than FAANG needs Europe.

They were there first. There's actually European alternatives for most digital services but they're nice because US giants were already established. Should US giants disappear from European markets for some reason the void would be filled easily, but as is there's no real room for competition to grow.

Not really which is why US giants always bend the knee. It's either this, or being shut out of one of the biggest markets on the planet and losing 20%+ of their market share and revenue, with the risk of someone willing to play by the EU rules filling the void and US corpos suddenly having a big rival on their hands. American corpos are the most judaised entities on the planet and aren't willing to risk this, hence they'll always bend the knee or eat the fine.

who can replace them? the only two countries with semi-independent tech stacks are China and Russia (at least as far as search/email/etc are concerned). but neither is a replacement for OS and a desktop suite

There's alternatives for pretty much everything around, just on a small scale because the market is saturated. Why do you think your corpos keep bending the knee? Because they're so nice?

please cool with the pilpul. Linux kernel alone is not enough and most contributors are anyway American tech companies. https://lwn.net/Articles/1013892/

this point extends to many other countries.
Software as a whole is mostly about getting something good enough at a cheap price out of the door before anyone else does it.
everyone has their own state-owned version of banking, management, support tickets, whatever bullshit commercial software takes cake not in industrial or infrastructure settings, they just didn't get to take the first massive wave of customers hostage with subscriptions and muscle memory.
