Why is the Dreamcast so beloved even after 25 years? Was it really ahead of its time?

It’s a legitimately interesting piece of hardware for its time that sat in between the offline and online generations. I think it is also the vibes of being killed in its prime + being SEGAs swan song.

I still play SA2, SoulCalibur, and Crazy Taxi on mine.

Your childhood nostalgia was just an overclocked SNES accessory and it showed in EVERY fucking game. Playing on the N64 didn’t feel like I was playing with beer goggles. Saturn would have easily been the goat though if they had just bothered to translate the games they already fucking made for it.

It has more of a cult following beacuse of the same 5-6 games that everyone brings up like JSR, Sonic, Crazy Taxi etc.
And a bunch of zoomers now also act like they are nostalgic for it just because they heard of sonic adventure and played bomb rush cyberfunk.
And for some reason 99% of the time they are always she/her/they/them

You can tell most people who love the dreamcast never owned one and have never played a single game that was on it. They all just like Sonic memes and low poly "y2k" renders.
Almost nobody ever mentions Space Channel, Power Stone, Rival Schools, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Spawn etc. It's always just the same two games they heard about on tiktok.

Everything about the Dreamcast was Sega learning from its fuckups with the Saturn (specifically how difficult it was to develop for):

> A single, powerful CPU with streamlined architecture instead of a complicated multi-chip setup
> Said CPU was used in Sega's NAOMI arcade machines, making arcade ports simple
> Support for Sega's own fast/streamlined/documented SDK or Windows CE (to make porting games from the PC easier)
> A shitload (for the time) of RAM
> A built in modem (instead of being an expensive addon)
> Four controller ports (instead of requiring another addon for 4 player games)
> Built in hardware AA

and some other cool shit

> Native VGA out support
> independent filesharing between memory cards without the console needing to be present
> a large (again, for the time) optical disc format that stored up to 1GB of data
> Their own gaming-specific dialup ISP (designed to reduce latency as much as possible)
> Plans for pic related

The only place they really fucked up on was the controller. They only did one stick, which seems like they wanted to push for arcade style games, but then they did a 2x2 console style button layout instead of a 3x2 arcade style layout. It didn't really make any sense then and still doesn't now.

The point is less the VMU itself and more the modularity as a whole.
Case in point, those slots were used for rumble, microphones, etc. not just the VMU.
And they could interconnect with each other outside of the console itself which I think is really cool.

This of course extends to the console itself which has modules you can remove and replace, like adding a network card, or other peripherals.

The modularity went away, but the most popular modules became standard.
Rumble and microphone connectors in controllers. Network part of the console. An OS that can manage basic system and data features.

To fix SA1 and SA2's PC ports, modders had to rewrite the rendering system

You can't really port them, since Dreamcast was a totally different platform. So you have to emulate it with modern techniques

You can't just pop Dreamcast assets into PC, you have to emulate Dreamcast hardware to an extent.

This was the same problem SEGA had when porting them from Dreamcast -> GameCube -> Windows (DirectX 8.1)

the dreamcast release was the ps3 of 1999. expensive and too advanced for its time but didnt have the deep pockets to wait out the storm. ps3 was $600 and didnt catch traction until they dropped the price to $300 4 years later

What? It only cost $200, against the PS2 for $300. In fact that doomed it because Sega took a big loss with each unit (Bernie Stolar made that decision, SoJ wanted $250).

Dreamcast?

Seaman

There were some good games I guess, but I think most people saw the Dreamcast and their thoughts went like:
>> Oh, that's the console with that weird fish guy huh, maybe I'll buy a PS2

Anyway people love it because it was interesting. It wasn't bad, it just failed to take off, and the games it had were unique and lesser known.

>When we were developing the Saturn 3D Controller, that was the first time we had ever tried to design an analog-input controller. We looked at how we could best make an analog controller, and spent a lot of time working on the basic design, control methods, layouts, and all the associated design questions.

>We also looked into all kinds of additional features; stuff like integrated displays, paddle wheel controls, mouse input, motion sensing, infrared, rumble, haptics, voice recognition... many different things. Most of these features proved too costly to have natively on the Saturn 3D pad, but we made sure to design the controller to include an expansion port so those features could be added later.

>We had actually planned out a motion sensor and vibration pack, and even made a prototype. We made sure that the controller's cord ran out of the back, since anything to do with motion sensors that you would have to tilt or shake around would be harder to use with the cord coming out of the front of the controller.

>For the analog inputs, we felt it was essential to use a sensor that wouldn't experience any change in the analog signal from drift or wear. To accomplish that, we used "Hall" elements. We knew we definitely didn’t want resistive sensors. We didn’t add them for the sake of having a selling point, we just saw it as the obvious choice. It wasn’t until 2020 that we saw other companies start making controllers with those same Hall elements. I guess the market finally caught up to the Sega 3D Control Pad, and it only took 25 years.

>The console could go online, but the concept extended beyond just that. There were also four controller ports, so you could have four people at once all playing together. Then, we decided we would try putting an individual display on each controller. We had originally conceived it as something like a personal monitor for each player for sports games, with individual displays. The VMU was our solution.

>Connecting the VMUs directly to the console would have meant we would have to add four pretty big ports for four players’ VMUs, which wasn’t a great solution from either a cost or design standpoint. So, we decided to explore plugging the VMUs into the controllers instead. Every VMU would be like a memory pack, but with an LCD screen and control buttons; it could have its own independent apps, and when it was plugged into the controller, the screen would serve as an additional display.

>Away from the controller, you could connect VMUs together to swap data with your friends, or play games against each other. That was another facet of the “communication” concept. For us on the peripherals team, we figured it wasn’t likely that every kid would have an internet connection they could use to play online, so we focused on ways we could build “play and communication” through controllers and accessories.

>We also planned out a built-in gyro sensor, so you could control games by moving the controller, as well as built-in vibration, and a built-in light gun pointing device. It turned out to be too expensive to implement those features natively, so we decided to build two expansion slots into the controller. That would leave room for us to release expansion units after the fact. We expected one slot would usually be occupied by the VMU, so we needed to have one more for other expansions.

>The most important decision made regarding the controller was to have memory units connect to it instead of the console. We designed the VMUs for that purpose.

>Sony Pictures: Hollywood accounting. Probably makes them a lot of money but is in the red on paper
>whatever the fuck Sony BMG is called now: prints money, blocks YouTube videos

I was a massive Sega fan growing up, with the Gamegear. I wanted the Dreamcast but parents wouldn't go for it.

In the end I picked one up super cheap a few years ago, and man it feels dated and plastic. No weight to the controllers, no second thumbstick for camera controls.

All the games I've tried just feel arcadey and not serious. I can still get my old PS1 out and have a much better time on it than this. It's a shame as I love the idea of it.

I like the vmu in theory, but battery life sapped a lot of the fun out of it for me. I would've preferred the cost of it's development to go to a 2nd joy stick.
But that end up being a "how could Sega have recovered" conversation. They probably couldn't, and I guess in that case I prefer the novelty of a vmu.
