It's more like there's more precision required and points of failure in trying to compact magnetic storage ever further.

This doesn't happen. At least not unless you are cold storing the drive for years, and in that case the longevity of the data in storage depends on how hard you'd used the drive beforehand.
But then, no one is arguing for you to buy SSDs for cold storage.

the problem is that shit happens that can't always be predicted. I have a computer from 1994 in my basement. Has't been touched in over 20 years. Disk still works just fine and I can mess around with it today. Good luck doing that with an ssd, you end up having a brick you can't boot and can't convert to anything if the hardware gets old.

Again, that's not the point. The point is sometimes you need to dig up data and multiple scenarios come to mind.
Maybe this one is easier for you to understand: imagine you mined bitcoin at the very beginning and then changed computers 3 times since. You now remember you had a wallet lying somewhere with some coins you'd like to cash out.

>>105571618
The ideal scenario is to have an hdd and an ssd and to do routine backups (lower overhead than raid1 and most scenarios allow for lapses without much repercusions).
But that's expensive for dubious value vs just an hdd and not avaikable as an option and many modern laptop configs.
