Why don't more powerbanks use rechargable AA cells? It's very convenient when you can just swap cells for new ones and recharge or even use regular alkalines.

18650, 2170 and 4680 are more energy dense and thus cheaper per energy

Because of complex voltage regulation. AA cells are 1.5V and you need like 4V to charge a phone. If you use 3 AA batteries you end up with 4.5V and the phone will blow up. However if you use only 2 AA batteries you end up with 3.0V and the phone won't charge.

It has multiple voltage modes and your phone negotiates via usb-c which one to use. Regular USB-A standard is always 5V.

That's only one of the modes, it switches the voltage depending on what you plug in. Read the small letters on your charger it probably has every voltage mode listed there.

This
>2.5Ah 18650 @ 3.7v = 9.25Wh
>2.3Ah AA @ 1.2v = 2.76Wh

AA is about 30% of what you would get from the 18650.

FWIW I used Samsung 25R 18650 and Energizer Recharge AA, on the "18650 Battery Store" site (cause Amazon was nothing but sketchy Chink batteries for 18650) and four of either costs the same: $10.

On a side note I would not trust anything to use a mish-mash of batteries, especially completely different sizes, especially some cheapo looking charger. Stick with a bunch of identical 18650 or 2170 from a reputable manufacturer if you want this sort of capability. But really... this is silly. Just don't let your shit die, how hard is it to charge your phone once a day?
>but it dies fast

Then you're on it too much or your phone sucks, buy a new one.

- AA rechargeable cells are 1.2V, not 1.5V
- You need 5V to charge a phone, not 4V (and also be able to switch to 9V, 12V or even 20V if you want quick charging)
- There are step-up and step-down converters to adjust the voltage, how do you think a phone charges its 3.6V battery from a 12V USB PD input

What is a stupid scenario.

Why are you in the mountains without a car that you can't charge from in the first place? Why did you let your phone die?

Extreme scenario cause you need your phone charged and you're in the mountains: solar panel, hand crank charger. Maybe even ask the gas station employee in BFE if you can plug in for a few.

Here in white countries we walk in the mountains. Cars are banned on the mountain trail.

You got your answer very thoroughly, other people prefer more energy in their battery than being able to swap them out for commonly available replacement cells. You should have learned when you were a kid that other people have different values and priorities than you, and to respect that.

And this is why you're not searching for maximum or optimal
Your paranoia of not getting fucked by life makes you settle for sub optimal results for fear of failure
I bet you translate this mentality in other parts of your life too, with a 5/10 looking wife and 2.1 kids you had with her, a decent normal average home that had all the tools but is rarely used, a fucking picket fence (because neighbours would be weirded out otherwise)

I bet the wildest, out of pocket think you ever do is go bowling or golfing on weekend.
