After 1 year of ten finger I am almost back up to my two finger max of 105wpm.
feels good man
>>105581866 (OP)After a couple months, I think I made the right choice going with the FSSK instead of the F104. But if Ellipse ever introduced a southpaw 104 (numpad on the left), I'd fucking cave and buy that in a heartbeat. The standard numpad still being on the right is a vestigial trait of the pre-mouse days and conflicts directly with having a mouse on the right side.
Also, sex with racist foxes.
>>105581866 (OP)what's a switch type that DOESN'T press by simply having my fingers rest on the keys? I got some ultra cheap mechanical that does this and it's really annoying

What's a key type that requires more pressure than a cherry brown? I definitely dodged a bullet by not getting one of their "lightspeed" keyboards.

What's a normal price for a custom pbt keycap set on cherry stems? 81 keys. Dye sub.
My favorite vtuber has a set but it seems monstrously expensive.
Can someone tell me a little bit of their experience about the Keychron Banana switches, I used to have a MX Brown keeb, currently running MX Blue keeb. I want to buy hot-swappable, but obviously I don't want to instantly take the switches out and spend on replacement.
Mostly worried about the shorter travel Bananas have compared to Browns.

>>105589427Normal price should be $20-45. XMI, Shenpo, and JC Studio are all quite good. $20 sets may be noticeably worse.
>>105588128Maybe try Cherry clears? They're heavier tactiles.

I'm looking to get a new keyboard, I used to have an 8BitDo keyboard, C64 edition with box whites.
Budget: $250
Location: US
Preferred switch type: I used to run with Cherry Blues, but I'm starting to get tired of the constant clicking. I'd like tactile switches, I used to have a custom board with Gateron Browns, but I was thinking something along the lines of Holy Panda or JWK Tactiles. Also had a friend recommend MMD Princess switches, which are apparently holy panda adjacent.
Layout: ISO
Form factor: 100% - 80%
Backlight: I don't really care about a backlight, with or without is fine
Also, I'd like to have a volume knob if possible

Keychron Q1
I've thought about getting a split board for ergonomics at my desk, but I've never used one before. Interested to hear about people's experiences with them. I'm partly concerned about changing layout too much from my laptop since I use the built-in keyboard quite often, so maybe I don't really want something that strays too far into custom layout territory.
I've seen the ZSA boards (like the moonlander), and they look cool, but I'm not familiar with other brands / options. I like mech keyboards, but I'm not really an enthusiast, so I'm not interested in a DIY build. If Keychron split a Q1 in half, I'd probably just switch to that.
>found my perfect keyboard
>its only sold on taobao or 200$+ due to resellers
anyone know of a keyboard that looks like pic related or similar? main thing i'm looking for is the rounded case aesthetic, double color, and no adjustable feet. Budget is 100$, but I don't mind going up a bit.
>>105601113I put them in the garbage like a normal person
>>105601758Looks like a bear75. I see a shop called nouvolo selling it, but pink is sold out.
>>105596063I'd get a Neo80 with a couple plate options for $160ish, Shenpo beige caps for $35, then spend the remaining budget on switches. Between four mounting options and two plate options (maybe alu and PC) you should be able to find a combination that suits you.
I'd make sure to get the wired PCB so you can make changes to the QMK firmware if the switches need more generous debounce timing, as heavy tactiles sometimes do
>>105601585What's the consensus on the Ultimate Hacking Keyboard (60 or 80)?
>>105602047The only good keyboard with "hacking" in the name is HHKB. If you really want a split board without any diy like the corne/iris/lily58 you can find on ali, get the qk duo.
>>105601585I think if the keyboards are different enough the difference won't be a problem. It's very painful to do e.g. ansi and iso, or normal backspace and hhkb backspace, because they're otherwise so similar that it's hard to remember to use them differently. But it's not gard to go from a regular keyboard to an iphone keyboard, because it's a completely different thing. If you do go for a split it might be a good opportunity to try a different layout as well.
Anyway if you stick with the familiar a Neo75cu with mx2a browns and alu plate would probably sound very good, might fit the budget.
>>105602136Also the "DIY" on a board like this is really more like assembling IKEA furnitureโnot a big deal.
>>105601443yes, it's saved on the board's side
How can you describe the tradeoff between switches with lower force with normal travel and higher force with less travel? Right now, I use Cherry MX Silver.
-HMX Vintage Citrus: 48/53g, 1.0/3.0mm
-WS Yellow Arowana: 32/37g. 2.0/3.6mm
-Outemu Lime V3: 35/45g, 1.8/3.3mm, tactile
>>105601986>nouvolo>40$ for shipping on a 130$ productdamn, but at least now I know where to get it. thanks

>>105602072Thanks! What are the issues with the UHK?
QK duo looks good - I'll add it to the shortlist.
>>105602159Yeah, that's a fair point. If I find one that ticks all the boxes, I'll consider a DIY.

How do I stop double typing? I'm pretty certain it's my typing technique because I've tested it with deliberate key presses on the switch itself and it never does it.
>>105607526First try increasing your debounce time to eliminate chatter as a possible cause.
>>105607619Yeah, I set it at 30ms to see if it'd help, but like I said when I hit just the switch deliberately repeatedly trying to replicate it it doesn't happen. It's just when I'm naturally typing. It's any character too, not just keys with stabs.
>>105607696Dunno what to tell you then, haven't heard of double-typing that wasn't caused by switch chatter before.

Anyone know where to find keycaps with the legends on the bottom edge of the keys for south side leds? Every time I put south into search engines I get side printed ones only.

>>105609910From the blurb and this image it looks like it does.
>mushywhat do you mean by this?
>>105610356The feel of the stem striking against the bottom housing is not satisfying because the soft silicone they use to dampen it feels too soft. Some silent switches strike a better balance where quietness doesn't come at the expense of feeling like that
>>105606426>>105607123what's the best price/quality concave split keyboard option considering i'm a noob and don't want to spend too much on my first one?
>>105613166Absolute dirt cheapest way would be to 3D print the case yourself (assuming you have access to a printer) and handwire it. Hand wiring is a pain in the ass though; I have plenty of PCBs I could sell that make building it way less tedious.
My outemu switches finally came today, but I decided against clipping the plastic pins to fit my 3 pin kb and I went ahead and ordered a cheap kit off AliExpress.
Any good brands that I can look into? I just need a TKL with an audio knob. Currently have a Ducky and I hate the caps led placement.

https://kbd.news/The-Japanese-duplex-matrix-1391.html
>>105615025>Unfortunately, for most keyboard firmware, you have to write your own matrix scanning algorithm for this to work, e.g. to rewrite the matrix.c file in QMK. Sounds cool, but far outside my ballpark.

There's this Keychron keyboard that I like but it only comes with these gateron switches. With prebuilt boards like these, can you replace the switches with your own cherrys?
>>105616935You'll really have to find out what model it is to get your answer. Keychron offers both hotswap and "fixed" boards, and they have a lot of options.
>>105616935Assuming the board is hotswap, then yes.
Why do people like aluminum boards so much? What if you get shocked
>>105616964People like heavy, metal things. Static shock is really not an issue.
>>105616964>Why do people like aluminum boards so much? They're heavy and they sound a bit different
>>105616964If you want to embrace the sound of your switches instead of stifling them, they help amplify the sound. Also, more weighty and sturdy than a plastic chassis without being ridiculously heavy for a board (unless it's very thick of course).
>>105613166Look up Maltron. Their ergo boards pop up from time to time on the second hand market for around 100 or less and are pretty nice. They use handwired Cherry black linears though and have plastic cases, so if that's not you thing you might need to look at stuff like
>>105613653. 3d print or get a farm to print your case and then do wire/diode wrapping on the switch terminals to an arduino which you can flash with a pre-done code library with no soldering required.
>>105616935Check for hotswap. If it's not listed you would need to desolder the switches and solder in your desired ones which shouldn't be too difficult with practice
>>105617662>aluminum>not the vril infused power of 304 sheet metal
How important is tenting on a split board?
>>105618742Not that important, but it's easy to do even with non-tented split boards. It's mostly a marketing thing honeslty.
>>105618742if pronation is a source of pain then definitely go for it, 30 degrees seems to be the sweet spot
>>105618752Thanks!
>>105618765Primary reason I'm thinking about a split board is to open my shoulders. I haven't really had issues with RSI. Sounds like I won't need tenting.

>>105622895Zoom98 comes pretty close, Meletrix has some in-stock. Unfortunately full size boards are a bit of a gap in the market right now.
Can I add a volume knob to any keyboard or does the board specifically need to be made to have one? There's this 75% that I like but no volume knob.
Has anyone ever bought used? I've never owned a Keychron before so I'm contemplating if $220 is even worth it for a Q model.
>>105624034The answer depends on your skills.
(If you have to ask, the board must specifically be made to have one.)
>>105620714well unfortunately you might have to make your own. given how expensive those were - they are the reason the model f succeeded it after all - you might never find an alternative
>>105618823>Has somebody made X yet? other than the guy I hate more than death because his didn't meet my standards for price/customer serviceIt's going to be easier if you just admit to yourself that you don't actually want to buy one that badly. >>105624144I don't mind Keychron, personally - I have a few of their keyboards for my office and they're just fine. I will say this though, you can probably put together a better board for around the same price as a Q model if that's something you're interested in doing. I use a Keychron C1 pro at the office, it's a significantly more affordable kb while still being comfortable to type on.
>>105625995pretty much what happened with me. not a fan of the way he runs his business, in fact i sympathise with that guy that regularly shits all over him on the deskthority model f thread. but i also really really wanted a new model f since in the ten years that i've kept an eye on this project, nobody else has yet to make one, so i bought it. and according to the few anons that've posted here about their model fs, he seems to have greatly improved the quality or consistency of boards ordered recently, compared to the earlier runs.

- TKL layout that most people find acceptable
- very low price for a good aluminum keyboard, it's kind of a go-to recommendation even for someone without specific needs
- ball-catch case construction and magnetic pcb connector mean it's very easy to take apart in seconds, which means it's much easier to clean than most keyboards

>>105626832>if not this, then whatThere are comparable 'kits' where you supply the switches/keycaps yourself. There are also more expensive boards. Choose blue, brown or red and then choose your size and then buy the cheapest keyboard available to you. Not satisfied? Get a Model M or membrane. Want ergonimic? Learn to solder and get a dactyl. It can all be boiled down to that.
>>105608218>who think they are anthropomorphic womenNigga has never heard of HMOFA
>>105640201This is a terrible oversimplification, if you mean the fundamental "press key to insert that key's character/function into the computer", sure, but keyboards are way more than that. Everyone has a different preferred feel/layout/sound/profile or specific features that fits them, blues, reds, and browns suck and there's no reason to buy them now
>Cheapest available to you Unless you specifically want this, why? If you have the income to do it I think it's more than justified to spend however much you want on a tool you'll be using every single day for hours on end. Even "dactyl" is way too vague, there's multiple types of them besides the manuform which is what I assume you're referring to. Do you want low profile or more/less keys or a mouse input or wireless?
I think a better comparison would be with cars. The vast majority of cars have the same basic, fundamental functions, but everyone has a different car that suits them, there's a reason why every single car you see isn't the exact same

>>1056406281/2
>Everyone has a different preferred feel/layout/sound/profile or specific features that fits them, blues, reds, and browns suck and there's no reason to buy them nowAll MX style switches are derived from the original cherry range. Browns, blues and reds are still widely used and are always used a benchmark to judge what slight alterations an MX clone has, but realistically the impact on typing experience is overstated and when people use a daily driver they quickly forget or overlook the switches they use as long as it falls into their linear/tactile/clicky perference. The only MX clone I have ever used and felt a substantional difference that was enough to make me cognisant of the fact while typing was kailh box jade and navy which even then is not surprising due to how fundamentally different the box stems are when compared to original MX design stems. Keyboard size is a non-issue too. Unless you are on the move there is no real reason to get something like a 60% and from what I have seen over the years you are paying more for the luxury of having less. Realistically you will only ever need a 75% or a 100% as 8/10 times you will have a work surface that will accomadate their size. Height being a selling point is also a non-issue as you can simply lower or raise your desk and/or chair to accomadate. Sound seems nifty and cool, but there is only so much variety and the downright snake oily way the keyboard modding scene has gone down over the years is ludicrous. Unless you have profound autism and really struggle with sensory processing a switch having a reverb or muted high end is something the vast majority of people would only pick up on if you pointed it out to sell it to them. Keycaps I do believe however have an impact such as the more raised edge profiles can rub againsts peoples fingers if they their fingers are slightly thick
2/2
>Unless you specifically want this, why? If you have the income to do it I think it's more than justified to spend however much you want on a tool you'll be using every single day for hours on end.
In theory you make a good point, but this assumes that there is a direct correlation with price and returns on quality with the keyboards you can buy today. The only time where cheapness becomes a detriment is when you look at below 20 off brand boards as they almost entirely use b-stock mx switches and unsecured pcbs. But the vast majority of the boards below 50 will do just as much as a board over 100 in terms of functionality and quality. Unless you are buying a non-mx, vintage or an ergonomic model for a hand injury the only real difference in paying more is paying for a differently engineered PCB along with the brand.
>I think a better comparison would be with cars. The vast majority of cars have the same basic, fundamental functions, but everyone has a different car that suits them
I agree, but the vast majority of car/motor-heads I have come to know become apathetic by their 40s and just stick with a simple literal daily driver because a small 4 cylinder 4 is just what they need.

What keyboard should I get as a chud?
>>105638881>Here he is!Remember when it was clearly audible in the Blacksimon build stream where he A/B compared the same board hotswap vs not? And the hand-wave answer was "it was a plate design issue and they're fixing it"โwhich exactly corroborates what I just said about plate fit being more important in hotswap builds?
How much evidence do you need before you'll admit you're wrong on this?
>>105642170Depends what kind of chud you are. On the one hand, e.g., I could see one sort of chud deriding screens on keyboards as Chinese or troon shit. But I can see another kind of chud buying a keyboard with a screen to put young anime girls on it.
One kind of chud thinks splits are for troons and degenerate weaklings. Another kind of chud thinks ergonomics is white excellence and the triumph of reason, and that it takes a high IQ to truly master multiple layers.
It's not a settled matter, in other words. The only thing we know for sure is that using artisans and novelties to 'express yourself' is gay and sโy.

FWIW I still advocate for noobs to get hotswap boards because the potential gains from being able to do "rapid-prototyping" experimentation with your board are so much larger than the downsides of hotswap (which, again, are basically zero if you have good switch-plate fit).

>>105642962why?
i frequently use the f keys for different things such as macros and i listen to a lot of audiobooks and podcasts which is why i have grown used to media control keys.
additionally i enter a lot of numbers so a numpad just expedites.
i want a keyboard to suit my needs. i have found one that almost does but i just wish to enquire if someone knows of one that ticks all my boxes.
why would a keyboard like that be disgusting?
>>105643526Let's address these one at a time.
>i frequently use the f keys for different things such as macros That's fine. This does not make it make sense to eliminate the small 0.25u gap that prevents accidental presses.
>i have grown used to media control keysI have nothing against them, but you ought to know that you can program any key to be a media control key on a function layer. I regularly use fn+space to pause/unpause audio, in addition to other combinations like fn+[ and fn+] for next and previous track. If you have the keycaps for it dedicated media keys are fine.
>numpadnumpads are, of course, based. But a full-sized 108 layout with gapless f-row looks even more retarded than a gapless 75%/etc. You want your dedicated media keys directly touching the numpad so you can accidentally press numlock every time you pause your media?
>>105643928i am confident enough in my typing ability that misspressed keys are not a skill issue i will have to deal with.

>>105641254>>105643526if money were no object, and you didn't mind waiting a few months, and didn't mind spending an hour or two to set up your keyboard, i would've said the repro ibm f122, it has a gap between the f-keys and number keys, but there are 24 of them and you can also assign them to custom functions.
it also has a 10 key block on the left side of the board for even more functions, all the keys can be mapped, on mine i plan to map the f13-24 keys as media control keys, bought the media keyset and gonna stick it up there to replicate my current keyboard.
but you want bluetooth/wireless capability so that's probably right out. it also weighs almost 9 lb/4 kg.

I just got a keychron c1 8k and it feels amazing. This is the kind of feel I've always wanted.
>>105655114>or was it just because you wanted to read it?yeah just because I wanted to read it, but since then I've learned a few things about choosing appropriate books for typing. The ideal is something where you can stop paying attention for a while and then continue reading without being lost. The analects of Confucius might be good, and other books of table talk, maybe Boswell's life of Johnson. Etc. Because it's hard to type and pay attention at the same time and you don't want to feel you need to go back.
>>105655837>Because it's hard to type and pay attention at the same time and you don't want to feel you need to go back. Not sure I agree with that sentiment, just because lately I've been using AI to help me better phrase some things but my way to proofread it is to type it back out rather than C,V it.
But I haven't tried re-typing a book. I have been wanting to read Book of Five Rings though.
>>105656041>Not sure I agree with that sentimentNot being able to go back two paragraphs will eventually fuck you if you try to do a book where this matters. Maybe there are some people who never, ever 'zone out' while reading and therefore never need to go back, but most people, especially if they are lightly distracted by trying to type in an unfamiliar style, are occasionally going to do this.
