Anyone have any idea why reencoding a 4K HDR video to 4K SDR would work when requesting it from one PC but not another? Both using a chromium based browser to access jellyfin. The logs don't show anything except

What's the specs in both system? The browser uses hardware decoding so it depends if the system is capable of playing the file. If the drivers are up to date, have yo tested other browsers?

So I just tried a few devices, it works on a bunch of windows and mac laptops (all with less than great specs), it works on a normal 5950X/3090 system.
It doesn't work on an ipad air 3rd gen and one 8700k/1050Ti system that's acting as a streaming box for a TV. The ipad obviously only can run safari but I tested firefox on the 8700k and it's doing the same thing. Webclient gets stuck on the loading spinner and the jellyfin backend quits encoding without any obvious reason.

The other machine has an ancient gpu and browser is reporting probably it can decode something when it doesn't, did you try the jellyfin standalone player on the pc?

Adding to this, I have a massive folder for movies and tv series encoded at 1080p, h264, aac audio in stereo (first) and 5.1 second (some devices don't like more than stereo sound) on mp4 container PLUS transcoding disabled for all users.
These formats play literally on every device on earth including a first gen chromecast, check that table of supported codecs. Saves you a lot of trouble.
AND I have another folder with 4k, AV1, 7.1 opus movies for the ones with recent smart tvs.

I just checked a bunch of stuff the important bit being the source file is H.265 10bit, ffmpeg tries reencoding it to H.265 8bit.
The ipad's chip can actually handle H.265 just fine, the 1050ti however can handle H.265 4:2:0 but not 4:4:4, maybe that's the issue? Still some error message would be nice.
But I still don't get how the objectively worst machine I've tried (5th gen i5 mobile CPU) handles it but not the 1050Ti even if it doesn't have full hardware acceleration support for H.265.

That machine has integrated graphics right? Try disabling the Nvidia card on device manager and connect the output hdmi/dp cable to the motherboard to test it

You're not dealing with 4:4:4 video. Nobody is outside of production houses and the retards doing shit like taking anime and inverse kernel resizing luma and trying to "preserve" chroma by inverse scaling and saving it 4:4:4. Fuck them.
