How come the big XR companies like Apple and Meta are purposely not making/funding decent and useful software for their devices?

All that shit only looks cool on videos. I tried using Meta Quest 3 for productivity, and you get tired much faster than regular desktop work, plus there's a lot of clunkyness where using your hands/gestures is slower than just using the keyboard/mouse on 2d screen(s).
Tried Vision Pro at work, and while the see-through cameras are better, all the problems are the same as in Meta Quest. Even more so since Vision Pro market is completely empty compared to relatively booming Meta.

They would be used if they were useful. A hand-poseable maquette for animation would be amazing.

because there's nothing important you could do in vr/xr that couldn't also be done on a single flat screen.

That's what I said - I tried Meta Quest productivity suite (Virtual Desktop with multiple screens widgets, cutting the see-through for the keyboard, etc). The only difference with the Vision Pro and the mockup in OP is the quality of see-through cameras.
Physical keyboard has much better feedback and accuracy compared to the AR one, which means that you won't be using VR controllers and you'll use your hands as a mouse cursor - and again, even in Vision Pro they are finicky and sometimes don't properly recognize exactly where you are pointing or when you are clicking - that never happens with the mouse and those small things interrupt your workflow.
And the biggest downside - physical discomfort and fatigue after using the setup for 45+ minutes.
Basically, it's a hardware issue, not a software issue. We'll get there eventually, but not with the current devices.

Also this. I got MQ partially to do VR sculpting, and after initial wave of excitement, 3 month in I don't touch it at all. It is a gimmick.
