at what point did gray and piano key black become the norm for PCs instead of white?

Right around the time manufacturers figured out that adding carbon black to ABS plastic hides the yellowing

Actually it's a cheap way to make plastic UV-proof. The bad side is that the plastic becomes almost indestructable and there's no way to get rid of it short of burning it or using noxious chemicals. You can't recycle black plastic either because you can't get rid of the carbon unlike other ABS colors where you can re-color plastic to something else.

White is the least UV stable color btw since it's just naked ABS with no pigment to act as a UV sink.

Yeah, my Dreamcast looks like what the dude from the Norf FC meme's teeth would probably look like. It's disgusting. I'm thinking about painting it white.

That may be the mixing of the plastic rather than sun exposure.

p. sure my Gamecube uses polycarbonate and not ABS because the case feels really super-rigid while ABS is loose and soft-feeling

I kinda like yellowed whites because it creates a cream color that is both nostalgic and comfy. Black has a usecase because it looks sleek and modern and doesn't change color but its just boring.
