I keep going into nas threads and honestly i dont get the terminology.

All i want is hard drives for all my blacked and scat porn but im running out of bays in my tower. Is there a solution where i just plug in like 8 hdds into it and it just shows up as 8 hard drives on my pc? No server bs no 3rd party programs to manage. Just straight up it pops up same as an ezternal hdd would.

My dad has a laptop and like 7 external hard drives and he keeps having to go unplug snd plug them in. Also the electircal situation is all fucked with all those externals plugged in. I too would like to know.

Yeah an enclosure will just read as external drives. You can install emby/jellyfin in 2 clicks and point your drives to it for a media server accessible on tv/mobile/remote too. You don't have to fuck with a NAS if you just need video.

you're asking for a jbod.
for the love of god go to ebay and get one that was pulled from a server. they don't use USB they use SAS. USB doesn't have enough bandwidth for more than 2 drives.
To use one you will need a pcie SAS card. >>105598168 if you want only 6 drives then you need 2 ports. it's 4 drives per port. a cheap or old one will need 8 pcie lanes and a newer/better one will need only 4. That probably doesn't matter at all unless you already have like 20 drives connected to the pc. avoid one that has a built in raid controller those are twice as much and pointless.
The total budget should be about the same as 1 drive. there's tons of cheap surpluss and chinkshit out there.

that's fine they're all bigger than that and a modern pc can handle a lot more than 8 drives.
make sure if you go the ebay route to get one that has the caddies included because buying a set of them seperately will cost nearly as much as a chassis with them included. Also make sure it's actually 3.5 inch not 2.5 because those are fairly common. You also might want to get a small server rack to put it on just keep in mind your pc can't be very far away because the max length of the cables is only 1 meter.

Terminology: what you think you're looking for is some sort of 4-bay JBOD USB external HDD enclosure (just a bunch of disks)

Trouble is, unless you build it yourself, these fuckers are more expensive than some old second hand QNAP or Synology 4-bay NAS would be. Which, as the name 'network attached storage' suggests, would also have network sharing and standalone functionality. You'll be able to watch your egestion porn from any device connected to the network!
