I bought two of these on eBay for 90 bucks each. How did I do?
>8 gb RAM
>intel i5
>500 GB HDD
One is for medical school and the other is for personal use. Do you think I can get by on them as my daily driver in 2025?

Being 100% honest: it depends if you play vidya or not. Only having 2 physical CPU cores was fine around 2010 and if you stick to software from that era then it will still probably be fine and some modern software might be tolerable but just accept that vidya performance is going to such donkey dick behind a Wendy's dumpster.

t. tried to run Mad Island on my old dell with a similar CPU.

I have a desktop for daily driving now, but still use mine unironically when I'm traveling. The absolute worst thing about the T420 is its screen (the speakers suck too but most people use headphones anyway). Some came with a 1600x900 screen, if you don't have that and you have the means to upgrade it then I would recommend it.
Linux runs pretty well, as you would expect. You may or may not have issues with the Wifi adapter randomly disconnecting, but that could depend on many different things and I don't know if it's even Linux's fault or not. Make sure to upgrade HDDs to SSDs as that's going to be your major speed bottleneck during normal usage.

Assuming they didn't come loaded with legit Windows 10 pro copy and a battery that last more than 30 minutes then yeah OP overpaid. EOL battery is the crux of buying $50 laptops on offerup...

With a dead battery. Soldered on top of that and replacing it is such a delicate surgery that you'll probably kill the whole thing because they kikes designed it so that if you misalign the new battery by 0.1mm it will cause a fire inside the motherboard.

T420s are prized because they're one of the last few reliable laptops made that don't require invasive surgery to replace the battery.

If I wanted a functional battery I wouldn't buy a 10 year old laptop.
Newer devices have better performance and power efficiency.

In THEORY laptop batteries could survive for 10 years if people didn't let them drop below 20% or charge above 80%. In practice most people never do this and after 1 year of use 20% of the battery capacity has already been nuked.

There is a bios option that limits the battery so you don't have to baby it

Maybe 1 out of a million will even bother searching and applying a simple BIOS setting, as far as they're concerned they paid for the whole battery so they're going to use the whole battery. That's why OEMs solder batteries now, they KNOW giving gentiles the ability to repent for their mistake of dogshit battery management is ultimately unprofitable except for the chinks who slap together a few 1500 mAh cells instead of the 2500 mAh cells they advertise.

Why do you do this every time, are you a bot? Of course people will replace the old battery. It's an upside that it CAN be replaced, modern batteries are glued in lol.

Every time though, without fail, you pipe up and imply that people can't buy a new battery. It's fucking $25.

I have a T420 but I rarely use it because it has that crappy lo-res TN panel and I'm too cheap to buy the 1080p IPS upgrade.

You need at least a quad core CPU to watch an online video these days.
Go flash core boot and then buy an i7-3840QM. It has much better iGPU.

just copy the link and paste it into the command line after calling mpv

it will use yt-dlp to download and then display the video and that works great, the only reason youtube is shitty is because it uses their vp9 format and javascript decoder when available to cheap out on mpeg licensing dues

i can play modern youtube on my SGI Indy lol by simply downloading the videos

T420s are just a meme. Their screens and and fan grills are very fragile. The trackpad flakes off like dandruff.

you can still get by with 8 GB if all youre doing is web browsing or word processing. I prefer T430s, loved the ribbed touchpad and style but havent found one yet that hasnt been abused. honestly all the T4xx series is missing is USB-C ports

T430s dont have USB-A 3.0 ports nor USB-C, so Im stuck with shit transfer speeds/using an adapter if I want to back data up to modern drives or my NAS.
