Google is still the undisputed king. Everything else, including Startpage, is just a backup. Yes, backups are more necessary than ever today as Google gets shittier and shittier, but even so they're not on the same level. Hate me all you want, it's the truth.

Startpage blows both of them out of the water, I'm disappointed I didn't find it sooner. It's my main search engine now and it returns more results than google per query, the results are more accurate, and it usually finds stuff that isn't indexed on google at all.

I'm not talking just about the results. Google is faster than literally any other search engine and the results are better arranged, especially when it comes to images, news, maps etc.

They'd be even further ahead if they didn't completely castrate their reverse image search or force shitty AI as the top result (which can be easily bypassed or blocked for now). Not to mention the countless DMCA'd results, but those are at least somewhat understandable because of legal issues.

If Google has been your default for a while, you'll feel the difference when you switch to something else.

In any case, it's not a dealbreaker on its own, but there are plenty of other aspects. For example, Google Images just looks better to me even as a layout compared to Startpage's images page. And the results are better. And it allows proper search operators, unlike Yandex for example that shows you lots of unrelated images no matter how many search operators you use.

Kek. I'm not shilling for Google of all things. I desperately want an alternative. I'm only saying that all the available ones that I've tried have fallen short. But there are a trillion search engines out there (even if most of them use the same indexes) and I've only tried a handful. Use whatever you want.

You realize all search engines farm their results from either Google, Bing or Yahoo right? They might apply some mods in an attempt to "fix" the results but it's all the same.
Only known exceptions are Yandex and Alexandria.
