What I find really interesting is how long it took the "Guuuuuurls in STEM" crowd to embrace Hopper. For the longest time they were obsessed with Ada Lovelace and completely ignored Hopper. I suspect it was early on due to Hopper still being alive to speak for herself and then later because of her connection to the military. It's only been since there's been pushback against the Ada Lovelace story that Hopper has been reluctantly acknowledged by feminists. The tech industry on the other hand has always openly lauded Hopper's accomplishments. Well, the old tech industry. No, she didn't. What she actually created was something more like a DLL loader and resolver.
The first thing you could call a compiler was developed in the 1950s by Alick Glennie (very much a man) for the Autocode suite of languages - hence why, until the 1970s, compilers were called "autocoders" in the vernacular.
Rest assured, the compiler was very simple, because Autocode was very simple - barely a step above assembly - but a compiler (convert a higher-level language to machine code) it was.
