/mg/ minimalism general
Everyone’s welcome to ask questions about minimal GNU/Linux and share their experiences, no matter their skill level.

Bloatware slows things down, creates security issues, and makes software harder to use by piling on features most people don’t need. Minimalist software, on the other hand, keeps things simple and efficient — it respects your time and doesn’t waste your device’s resources.

When will the minimalism thread get as minimal of an OP as the mpv thread?

That's an oxymoron.

He would be more productive if he threw away all of Unix and C and let real programmers do things.

How can I avoid non-bitmap fonts in GNU/Linux? Is it possible to have a desktop environment and only have bitmap fonts?
Currently on Arch + Cinnamon, but I've only managed to get one bitmap font (Terminus) to work in Mousepad and GNOME Terminal.
(Also I think not even the Terminus is working. If I make it larger, it will no longer look like a bitmap font)

as I said in the last thread this seems to be a pango issue. Using Fontconfig you can do things like set a default font for all programs (Terminus in your case), as well as disabling anti-aliasing on fonts globally though I wouldn't recommend this. There is a good article on the ArchWiki about this and if you are really lazy just ask an AI to generate a Fontconfig for you. In regards to the font becoming blurry when resized, please make sure you are using the .otb (bitmap font format) version of Terminus and not a .ttf or .otf (vector font formats). Most if not all Linux programs should recognize bitmap fonts and scale them correctly but if they aren't supported and you care enough about bitmap fonts, I'd just ditch GNOME programs and use something that doesn't clash with the linux ecosystem.

What are some lightweight gtk icon packs and themes? Is everything vectorized these days?

ChatGPT just says that gtk3 or above doesn't like bitmap fonts in general. I don't know how to use the bitmap version of Terminus. I installed Terminus via pacman -S terminus-font, like ChatGPT told me. fc-list shows many .otb versions of Terminus, as well as many .pcf.gz versions of it. I don't know which one I am using or how to control it.
I also have the sneaking suspicion that I'm already using the bitmap version of Terminus, but it has the ugly 3D effect built-in. I feel like I'm being cornered, and forced to look at blurry fonts because that's how society is constructed. There seems to be no way out of this hell.

I just want to look at fonts that don't give me headache and nausea. Is that too much to ask?

yes, the terminus-font package is in the correct bitmap format and if you don't have the ttf version installed (its a separate package) you shouldn't have to worry about that. Could you send a screenshot of what it looks like? When I used Xfce, I was able to go into the theme settings and change the default font to Terminus which changed my GTK and Qt theming to look nice and crisp. its definitely worth installing the Xfce Terminal and seeing if it has the same issue or not. Good luck anon.

forgot to mention Cinnamon should have a theme menu if I'm not mistaken, try changing it to Terminus there and see if it looks right

all the popular ones are vector-based but there are some bitmap ones too if that's what you look.

I used to use one based on the Windows 95 desktop that was pretty cool, you could always just take the icons from the GitHub if that's all your after.

It looks perfect when small (12pt). When I enlarge it, though, it has this very subtle 3D effect. It doesn't look *blurry* like non-bitmap fonts, but it doesn't look like a proper bitmap font either. I don't know if I'm imagining it, but it does not look as good when enlarged. The 3D effect is the most pronounced at the very top of the character.

Terminus is also too rounded so it doesn't really let me see the detail of the font, which fucks with my brain.

is picrel appearing with the 3D effect for you? trust me I am just as autistic about bitmap fonts as you (I spent over a week hacking my site's CSS for them to look right) and there is no smearing from what I see, I've sized it up 6x here and I tried a paint bucket over it in The GIMP with 0 threshold but couldn't find any blurring. As for other bitmap fonts, there are a few mentioned on the ArchWiki article on fonts in the Bitmap section but I would also recommend this GitHub repository containing a selection of X11 bitmap fonts alongside screenshots of how they look :)

That's really cool. I thought no one wants bitmap fonts but me. At least there is some hope.
I did have to change my monitor's settings because even my monitor tries to force the hell of blurriness on me.
