Communism, capitalism, whatever -- as long as the people aren't permanent underlings to a powered elite, anything can likely work. Crony capitalism comes about because the people get caught sleeping for a generation or two and wake up to a reality in which money, politics, and media are intertwined to the point where money owns media, which looks the other way as money buys politics; politics then obediently waits its turn (or, lately, maybe not!) to become moneyed... and then uses the highly domain specific knowledge and connections to perpetuate the cycle.
The common denominator here is just power. It might seem like it's money, but that's because money is the current best implementation of power. Once it was church, aristocracy, etc., and for a brief time it was suffrage; now it's money. The power is supposed to be ours, but now it belongs to money.
But thanks to McCarthyism, now even milquetoast criticism of how things are set up its politically verboten -- both parties, despite their differences, even now will agree: if you think crony capitalism sucks, That's Heckin Communism.
