Public torrents are inherently insecure from a privacy perspective. It doesn't need to be a honeypot everyone can see your fucking IP even if they download or upload nothing. Move accordingly. Use a VPN or something. TPB is one of the few public sites that allows unrestricted user uploads so be careful running software that comes from there. They remove malware after users report it on their forum but that's like going to the cops after getting raped in your asshole, you still wind up with aids.

More about the honeypot question. How did they stay up so long? Low operating costs. They aren't running bots feeding their site with new torrents like for example rarbg was doing. They do have bots like TvTeam run by the iptorrents crew and they give them special verified status. But they don't operate piracy infrastructure themselves. They just give magnet links. Simple, cheap, resilient. But I'm sure you can imagine there isn't much money to be made in this either. If similar sites that were more profit driven than TPB shut down that makes it kinda obvious right?

I never understood the "private" tracker thing how could it be more "secure" than magnet
at least with magnet they have to actively crawl and analyze IPs
trackers made it too convenient
if I and almost anyone can get in to "private" trackers so does the pigs

Well it's so much easier to go for the low hanging fruit. I use private trackers extensively and there are pros and cons. At the lowest level it's a for profit business and pretty scammy. At the highest level it requires lots of effort and years of waiting to get into all the best trackers. The low level ones have been infiltrated by copyright trolls a few times but they were eventually found and banned. This is impossible to do on public trackers. You are simply stuck with those faggots. As far as private trackers go with glowies they want to bust admins and top uploaders, not random users.

When you sign up you get asked "are you a cop or a lawyer?" and neither cops, nor lawyers are legally allowed to lie, so it's 100% safe. Only filesharing enthusiasts are on private trackers.

TPB is based. Private trackers are so fucking gay. If I want something free I'm not paying some faggot nerd loser for the privilege of downloading it. They all want donations and micro manage your ratio.
>Oops your upload ratio dropped from 2.0 to 1.99 now your banned unless you donate $100 and fellate me on the forums!!!
Fuck off. If a public tracker doesn't have it I'll just buy the damn movie or show or whatever. Not like I've yet to find something that isn't available for free somewhere.

>thinks you need to pay for private trackers
More likely you need to pay for a VPN to not get letters from your ISP about using public ones depending on where you live. Also the speeds are shittier, retention worse, quality worse. Bitching about needing to maintain a ratio is emblematic of everything wrong with public trackers. You shitters don't seed back what you download, therefore your system functions rather poorly. A few people (including me, I seed on public trackers) do all the work seeding and everyone else does all the leeching. There is also a lot of content on private trackers that you can't find on public trackers, if you're a capeshitter maybe you won't notice. I upload a lot of this stuff to public trackers and make an effort to keep it seeded. But usually as soon as I stop seeding it the torrents die.
