Gee I sure am tired of every piece of image-related software I use having support for this format but being cockblocked by the WebP fuckhead on the Chromium team.

nice, but why would they also add a video codec (avif)? can you make videos in photoshop now?

avif is just a container for av1 frames. hypothetically it could contain multiple frames but it's not as if I've read the HEIF spec.

Not sure if you're bein cheeky but AVIF is a 2D raster image format that's basically a AV1 keyframe from what I can tell.

AVIF = AV1 keyframe = "VP10" keyframe
WebP = VP8 keyframe
AVIF is way better and JXL is infinitely better. JXL is actually purpose-made as a 2D raster image format instead of repurposed shit from video codecs.
and the guy who yanked preliminary JXL support from chromium is one of the co-authors and lead maintainer of WebP, oh sorry is that too CONSPIRATORIAL for you?

It never got any hardware acceleration so it's like 100X slower to encode compared to JPG which does have hardware acceleration. AVIF aims to fix this oversight but as far as I know the only hardware acceleration it has like at all is through a $10,000 FGPA so it's not like there's any hurry to switch to AVIF right now.

Otherwise Webp is a pretty BLEH image format. Lossy isn't that great, lossless is good, and holy shit is this the perfect replacement for GIF since it can compress existing ones without any loss in quality.

but what if I wanted to make an image larger than 8k? it would have to, I don't know, stitch together multiple tiles and then have artifacts at the tile boundaries or something

nobody cares zoom zoom, if you don't care about image size, why not just use PAM?

That's only a limitation for hardware decoding. You can make AVIF images with resolutions higher than that without tiling.

>>105628290
Why do you think Webp failed to attain any meaningful adoption? Jewgle even went as far as forcing websites to use it against their will (see AMP). Lack of hardware acceleration, the thing nobody cares about because they know jack shit what it even means, was missing from webp.

this needs to be updated
for the lossless row, png should be 2/4, webp be 3/4 or 4/4, and avif be 1/4
