x60 is useless, terrible screen and CPU is quite bad too by now

T60 only complaint is CPU

T510 this is the best laptop ever made, for simple web browsing if you dismantle a W510 and take its screen and put it in T510

T510 original screen is super bad

W510 is bad today because it has 2GHz quad core CPU and Nvidia graphics.single thread works very slow

T510 is incredible because it has the best dualcore CPU (it boosts to 3Ghz) which was available in 2010 and it has intel graphics and yet it has tolerable cooling as well. The laptop is still useless though if you cant find w510 screen.

T520 is bad, sansy bridge wasntr ready for this..
T420 is same but smaller

T430 is where things turn good again, the only bad thing is screen but 1600x900 version is at least tolerable

T440/T540 is the end of Lenovo, thing are in horrible state

There isn't a reason to use an old ThinkPad unless you're a collector.
If you want repairability you'd buy a Framework
If you want it to be cheap, there are plenty of other options on eBay
If you want it to be durable, buy a ruggedized laptop
And if you want a trackpoint, buy a trackball mouse.

yeah but a trackball mouse is almost as huge as a 12" lenovo laptop, volume wise, do you think it fits in backpack with the laptop

Old Thinkpad only has the novelty factor of flashing BIOS with a raspberry pi.
There aren't any good laptop that is strong enough for handle bloated websites while retaining the ability to do heavy tinkering anymore.

3GHz speed helps with bloated network pages
Many laptop CPUs are now 2.4GHz which is real bad

They burn up too easily now, temperatures are 80 degrees in a 2.4GHz Intel chip

With Ivy bridge, you got 3 GHz at 67 degrees if it was dualcore (quads get worse)

It seems like Ivy Bridge was best chip Intel ever made, minus the fact there has been new multimedia extensions added to CPUs since year 2014

Nigger he posted a normal sized trackball. The minis are shit. The trackpoint and trackball aren't alike at all.

>>105628794
>Framework
Overpriced bullshit. You will never "repair" it and you'll never own it long enough to need to replace the overpriced "modules". Imagine paying $1k+ for that garbage
>Cheap
Thinkpads. Just not the ones he posted. I got my last one for $300. It's less than 2 years old.
>durable
There are no durable laptops on the market anymore aside from high priced shit intended to be sold to glow niggers that don't pay out of their own pocket anyway.
>trackpoint
No one else makes a laptop with comfy trackpoint.

The newer thinkpads might have worse build quality than the old ones. But they're miles ahead of anything else on the market. Including the shit the Apple shills try to shill here everyday.

I never understood the idea of framework.
The first thing that gets bad is usually the battery after 6 or so years. But then you look it up and your cpu and ram are also outdated. Also most monitors have moved from 1080p to 4k or even 8k in a few years. So you replace everything except the usb c ports. Might as well buy an entirely new laptop at this point

>you disagree with me therefor you're angry
Nah. I'm just not retarded and know better than to spend $1k+ on something like a consumer whore when I can get the same thing for $200 on ebay. My "used" thinkpad wasn't even used. I came brand new with a pre-installed copy of Windows 11. I sold the key for $50 right away and the hardware was fully supported by any OS I wanted to put on it. I expect it'll continue working for at least the next 15 years. It has a more powerful CPU than most people have in their desktop computers and it does everything I need it to. It even came with a touchscreen that I don't use but allowed me to get the best screen available for that particular model.

I use trackball everyday on my desk. Trackball and trackpoint are nothing alike. You'd know this if you used them instead of just parroting bullshit you read on the internet as if you're an expert. Framework laptops are a scam. Anyone that pays for one might as well be an iToddler. Which is the entire point of them. They're targeted to the same market: Retards.

People who say this have usually never experienced enterprise grade warranty repair.

Back when Lenovo used to use the IBM ESC ticketing system for their warranty repair (this was available up until around 2018) you could file a ticket for any random bullshit wrong with your laptop and they'd send a guy over with parts shipped next day air to fix your laptop for you. Chargers, keyboards, motherboards, bezels, they did it all.
No questions asked. No call center monkeys to deal with. The quality of service IMO was better than Snap-On.
That's why every time anyone wanted to buy a ThinkPad, I told them to buy it new and get the 5 year extended warranty.

Now you can't do that. So what's a man to do when no laptop on the market has a real warranty anymore?
Buy a Framework laptop and just buy the parts that broke.

I own a W530 that I can't repair anymore because the fan broke and you can't get one on eBay.

Just because you have a skill issue and don't know how to use a trackball doesn't mean it isn't comparable to a trackpoint.
I beat the entire original Assassin's Creed in one sitting on a trackpoint. It took 8 hours.

sandy bridge CPU is worse than the mobile version of 1st gen CPU (on desktop things get reversed)

ivy bridge is the best of the three (it is 3.gen)

you get ivys from x230/t430, not in n220

that being said x220 keyboard is best ever

One day the shitty sleeve bearing on your laptop's fan will break too, like it did on mine.
DESU these days repair isn't really necessary since people don't leave their houses anymore.
The odds of you dropping your laptop are almost zero once you graduate college.

I just bought a T480 missing the external battery for $80 to learn linux and study programming for my classes over the summer.
It will be sitting on my desk, attached to my 4k monitor but I can still take it with me if I want to since it has an internal battery.
It has 4 cores, can be upgraded to 64gb of ram and is extremely compatible with linux.
There's plenty of use cases for them, it was the best option for my use case.

It's more of a political support product than an actual useful item. They came along when Right to Repair was big in the news. People who buy it believe that they're supporting some independent manufacturer or small company that stands for their values. It's like the same people who pay extra for a System 76 laptop, even though it's just a rebranded Clevo

I already have 2 laptops, a steam deck and a gaming desktop.
Also my uni doesn't provide laptops, only discounts.
I just wanted a dedicated device for that purpose, mixing work from my actual job, play and hobbies in one PC makes me lose focus and worried that I might show something inappropriate during work meetings when I have to share my screen.
I didn't even want another computer but there really is a use case for me.

you can buy a X1 Extreme glass trackpad on aliexpress and it'll fit just fine on a T480/A485. make sure to get the one with the correct part number though (has "36008C" somewhere in the part number iirc) or it won't work on Windows (doesn't matter if you're using Linux I believe)

HP elites are the new Thinkpads. They're mostly repairable and because they're used as corporate laptops there's loads around.
