I think he just kinda did that because it was the big money maker at the time, not because of love for the game like Carmack. The big things Microsoft are known for are MS Office (utilitarian thing written to solve a problem, as opposed to vidya), MS-DOS (which was purchased, not developed), and Windows (largely started as a Mac OS clone for IBM clones, another utilitarian thing). Everything he did was in the pursuit of money and growing Microsoft, not out of passion.
