my parents see me as the tech person and they need a new washer & dryer. what the fuck do I recommend them? how do I compare w&ds on the market? there isn't a pcpartpicker for em. I'm at a Loss.
For /g/ euroanons, yes we all do use dryers in America. It's not a Hollywood thing.

One of the best times to buy large appliances is during Independence Day sales so you better get on the ball.
Stay away from anything internet connected. Blinky lights are bad but you might not have too much choice on that. Lots of people recommend Speed Queen washer and dryer sets but keep in mind that now that they're popular with consumers and sold in big box stores, those big box retailers might have pressured Speed Queen to make cheaper, less robust models to sell in their stores.

Why are you coming here with this? You are asking /g/ for help with the easiest appliance purchase, just go to home depot, sort by best sellers and buy the two that are in your parents price range
Modern washing machines/dryers are incredibly simple and energy efficient, just fukcing pick one

Go to store. Buy washer+driver with knobs, no computer, and only simple motors. Pay local junk guy to fix it in 10 years when the belt slips or falls off or the motor needs to be replaced.

EZ.

Matter of fact skip the store and just buy whatever he's got laying around. They always have garage full of them. Washer and dryers are like the easiest appliance to fix and keep going. It's literally one simple motor+belt drive.

How often do they wash large, bulky items like blankets or even lots of towels? The two most frequent issues with washers are circuit boards and off balance loads causing the plastic components to tear apart. If they do bulky items, they need a machine designed for that.

Or you know. Just load it correctly and stop the cycle when it starts to vibrate the entire house. That plus blow out the drain line from time to time.

Most people are constantly replacing washer+dryers because they fail to clean them out once a year.

EU has dryers too. Better dryers too. Because Miele is much more affordable.
But anyways, European brands are usually better. Miele, Bosch, Electrolux/AEG.
Specifically don't buy Samsung.
Read the manual, don't overload the machine.

I guess avoid Maytag and Whirlpool their stuff is "Assembled in America", but it seems like plants must be in the shittiest of shitholes with no work ethic or Quality Control.

Hello Anon, I've spent a lot of time looking into washers and dryers.

For dryers, honestly, they've worked the same way forever. Don't overspend on a dryer.

For washers, the technology on top load washers has gone to absolute gimmicky shit. So if you want a top loader, you need to get one that has a DUAL ACTION AGITATOR that allows you to FILL WATER TO THE TOP. Most new washers do not have either of these options. They will claim to have huge 5+ cubic foot drums but are all only capable to fill 70% of the drum with water. Also no washer made today is going to be as dependable as they used to be 20 years ago.

Therefore, my recommendation is that you buy this very underrated washer/dryer set. WITH THE PROTECTION PLAN.

This washer can fill to the top, it has a dual action agitator that can turnover (eventually) even a comforter. This is the Amana NTW4516FW model series. It can come in other brands such as Inglis. See the two knobs on the left? Don't confuse it with one that has 3 knobs on the left side that looks very similar. That model is junk.

Anyway, pic related is unironically the best top load washer you can buy price to performance ratio wise.

Dont turn you nose up at it just because its not space age looking.

I do residential maintenance for work and the easiesit to fix are amana and speedqueen. The speedqueen is by far the best double the price of the amana

Important takeaways for a dryer:
- It must spin both directions or shit will get tangled. This is most important.
- Get a heat pump based dryer, they're efficient, don't need a vent, and aren't a fire hazard. They're also gentler on clothes.
- Bonus if you can plumb the condensate to a drain.
- Dryness setting/moisture sensor.

Also stop using fabric softener if you use a clothesdryer. It's redundant and leaves oily residue on your clothes. Especially don't use it on towels.

Buy basic appliances.
Top loading washer with the matching dryer. Almost doesn't matter the brand because they are all made in the same place.

Literally no reason to spend anymore because it doesn't get you quality unless you start getting into Speed Queen. Any money spent after the basics just goes to more tech that's has more possible failure points.
