Used to only be Xfce, but now a lot of people use KDE. COSMIC is probably going to pick up a lot of shilling as it approaches release.

People don't usually use them as a combo. XFCE was the most stable just werks DE that didn't fall for meme shit during the era of GNOME 3 and KDE4 so a lot of people here moved to it. i3 is the most popular/accessible tiling WM so if you want to be a poster on r/unixporn you'd naturally gravitate to it.

This is also why >>105643297 the Pop OS COSMIC desktop is DEFINITELY going to be seen a lot after it comes out. It's basically babbies first tiling WM without actually having to ditch using a DE. It also takes a lot from the r/unixporn ricer aesthetic and afaik it also uses i3 shortcuts.

it's because you have to use xfce to make i3 just werk (and then continue to fight xfce anyway)
i3 attracts muh minimalists but they can't admit that manually managing core desktop components like dbus and notifications is autistic
and xfce is one of the last X-only DEs where you can swap out the window manager, so they don't have much choice

You can get close, but GNOME doesn't play well with window controls on the left. You also can't replicate the global menu accurately on GNOME, and even on KDE certain programs don't support it at all (Firefox). You also need plugins to support the titlebar merging into the menu bar when the windows are maximized. When most people make a "Unity-style" for their DE, it's just a menu bar and a vertical dock. None of the features that actually made Unity make sense as an iteration of the OS X desktop.

GNOME devs will ignore standards and purposely GIMP the user experience because it doesn't suit their "vision". A good chunk of its devs are arrogant and standoffish for no good reason. Sometimes they outright lie about facts, e.g "Wayland can't support CSDs".
See the Wayland CSD debacle and how it affected the Factorio devs.

By default it lacks the most basic of features, that any basic desktop UI released in the past decade puts it to shame. GTK4 doesn't have tray-icon support, and they put little to no effort in making Qt applications look good on GNOME.

KDE on the other hand actively listens to users, featureful, friendly devs and puts the effort of making GTK apps blend-in with the Qt ones (where possible, GTK4 doesn't support themes). Also, they are backed by VALVE now, a company that would care about the desktop user experience.

>See the Wayland CSD debacle and how it affected the Factorio devs.
It was about SSD, not CSD, but the fact remains that GNOME is pretty much the only part of the Linux desktop stack that doesn't care about breaking downstream. Not only do they not care, they will act out of spite (case in point, Wayland supporting SSD) and try to block anything that doesn't align with their nebulously defined vision of a perfect desktop.

Oops. My bad.

But yeah. What GNOME does actively harms the development of the Linux desktop, promotes fragmentation (See: "Transmission must decide if its a GNOME app or XFCE app"), and gives devs yet another headache when targeting Linux (Again, see Factorio and MPV).
MATE, Cinnamon, Cosmic and a few more wouldn't have existed in the first place if they didn't destroy GNOME 2's workflow, while being arrogant and abraisive.

I agree that Unity was the perfect ux for laptops (and obviously they HAD to abandone the project) but i don't on your "felt off" about xfce: it's literally one of the most configurable out there, i can agree that the default setting is retarded (classic bar with menu on top and dock on bottom) but nowadays you don't even have to manually adjust it, just go to settings > panel > anf select a different preconfigured panels profile.
