How did John Carmack get the know-how to write Doom in his early 20s when he dropped out of college? Did he really just read a bunch of books? I don't imagine that you could easily find a book on data structures in the 70s and 80s as you can now, so I'm really curious how he got so good.

He just knew a lot about x86 PCs and how to work around their limited video hardware
It's not like Doom was some sort of magical achievement in the frontiers of the latest technology, Doom is only notably tech wise because it ran fast on regular office PCs so you could play Doom at work in-between spreadsheets.
Pic related is what true cutting edge graphics looked like at the time. Daytona USA was shown off at a tech conference a few months before Doom came out, and was made generally available a few months after Doom in the form of a 30 thousand dollar arcade cabinet. It would take half a decade before you could get this kind of power in a home computer, at any price.

what was done in doom had been done much better for at least a decade earlier by more expensive computers used for real time and rendered 3d computer graphics. it wasn't like 3d graphics was unknown before john shat out doom. john's claim to fame was making textured 3d work on really low powered x86 computers that cost a fraction of what the big boy's used.

Sorry but that guy hasn't produced or developed anything good or worthwhile since Doom II.
Doom 3 was full on grey color pallete slop that was utterly mogged by Half-Life 2, the generation defining gaming experience.
In retrospective, the whole Quake series only had one truly good entry, which was the first game. But not really that. It was the community that made it great. Namely with Rocket Arena and Team Fortress. No Quake game on its own was anything noteworthy.
Everything else isn't even worth mentioning?
Rage? lmao. Slop b4 slop was a chuddie term.
Don't even reply anything to the contrary. You know I'm correct. No, you didn't have "unfathomably based fun" playing anything post Doom II and Quake 1 mods.

not everyone here is all that interested in sucking on the diseased micro penis of john or giving him credit for inventing anything. what was that other claim to fame.. people giving him credit for that fast inverse square root number in quake.. that he (or one of the other programmers) lifted that from a research paper, didn't even understand what it did. gtfo. it's ok that your favourite hacks just aren't geniuses inventing things. why do you think facebook lost over $1bln while john was in charge of VR? because he was a genius? it was the equivalent of moot working for google - absolutely nothing brought to the table.

John Carmack is an unusually industrious and hyperproductive gigasperg. He literally does just work and read all day and it's endlessly fun for him to the point where he claims he has never burned out even once. He's the type of freak that hates the idea of a 9-5 because it means he has to go home at 5pm.
You can't really compare people like that to college grads that subsist off of the stress and pressure of failing

I actually enjoyed Quake Champions for a bit, even though I originally was vehemently against the hero powers. It was a pretty good experience that reminded me a lot of Q3, but where it breaks down is the complete lack of mapping support. Nevermind the fact that you spend 15 minutes looking for a game because there's no dedicated servers allowed.

No mapping, no modding, and no dedicated servers just means the game may as well be dead before it ever even had a chance. It doesn't help that Saber has precisely one single developer on the game. Peak gloabl players is usually around 400 and 250 of them are afk. I think I've ran into every single QC player there is, even when I go back randomly it's the same people it was 2 years ago.

I quit QC once Diabotical came out, had a ton of fun dueling and playing wee-bow instagib, but like every other AFPS the game was doomed to fail, even if firefrog and 2GD put in an incredible amount of work. Good software and passion only gets you so far when you're trying to be profitable in a space that has maybe 500 players willing to play. Being an epic exclusive on launch probably didn't help.

The time has passed, there will never be another Q3. There will never be another Tribes. Not because we're incapable of making the best FPS games with modern day tooling, but because nobody wants to play them.

A few years back I saw this game developer on twitch who was developing some stupid racing MOBA game in C++ in visual studio 2005 or something. He basically made it so he could compile all the gamecode logic into a dll, so he didn't have to reload the game all that much. His compile times were super fast. His VS config was super slick and minimal too. And he used vim for shader code (I think).

most people that program in C++ don't have the wherewithal to do it with any sense of correctness. they use what they figured out by bumping into walls after attempting to write C with C++, or try to write java in C++, or dont spend 5 seconds thinking about what they are trying to do. there IS a method to the madness, but few people understand it.

also some of the language is absolutely retarded, and it gets worse every 3 years.

He didn't just write Doom... he had a long progression through the entire 2D genre even before Commander Keen and he had multiple 2.5D games before Wolfenstein 3D. It's not like he just busted out and dropped Doom out of nowhere. There is a long well documented progression of skill starting with the most basic shmups written in assembly

Everyone I know who takes psychedelics is also a fag and a retard. The worst kind too, since they think their trips made them oh so "enlightened" and go off on the most basic bitch "spiritual" mumbo jumbo about "oneness", but nothing they say is unique or substantial. I'm curious about your success with psychedelics though, can you post your github so we can see proof of your intelligence and productivity after using those drugs?

>Elon musk is taking ketamine all the time
lol if you think he's someone to seriously look up to. He doesn't design anything himself, it's all the work of his engineers, and he acts like a manchild, jeopardizing important political relationships over minor things. On top of that he wants unlimited jeet immigration and is probably incontinent after years of ketamine abuse. He was just lucky enough to have a large share of PayPal when it kicked off and got subsidies from the govt. for Tesla and SpaceX. Not surprised someone like you would like Elon though, since a lot of the wannabe spiritualist psychedelic fags also love pajeets and think India is some mystical spiritual place and not the world's biggest literal shithole.

6th generation.
4th generation and 5th generation started it though, but 6th generation locked it in.

4th & 5th gen had consolewars and graphicsfagging, but it was relatively light and cute. Nintenbabs & sony & sega suckers going at it.
6th gen had consolewars and graphicsfagging over how PS2, xbox & gamecube games looked different, but budgets were still small enough that publishers could take risks. Massive libraries were still possible.

7th gen carried over the worst of everything.
Graphicsfags, check.
Consolewars, check.
AA budgets being decimated, check.
Creatives leaving studios, check.
Inflated budgets requiring safer game design, check.
Remakes and remasters, check.
GFC doing in the small studios, check.
Indie darlings, check.

So, look at the 6th gen and you'll see some hallmarks start up. Arguing over which console version of full spectrum warrior looks the best. FF XII's development ballooning out of control due to scope creep, matsuno melting down, FF VII tech demo being shown off for the PS3. It started.
7th gen still had AA games, but everything about small game design crippled. Sure, we got NieR, Drakengard 3, Disgaea 4 in that time for smaller, more risk taking projects but a lot of everything else was either license based, tied to a massive studio (even NieR & DoD3 get this) or publisher. Studios that took a risk that flopped either died or got stuck in licensed game mines under bamco.

6th gen's to blame. It sowed the seeds for graphicsfaggotry and the market conditions of the 7th gen to set in.

If you really want to use wiki and lists, go through the 90's, 00's and 2010's. Look at the top games of each year, scour the complete release lists for things like cult classics or smaller games.
You'll see that start to dry up around 2006 when the seventh gen hit, then by the time the 8th gen hits it's a wasteland.

In fact, here you go. Let's use Drakengard again.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_in_video_games
It was released in 2003. People shit on that game for the combat, arguing it's worse than AA but, not, it aligns with AA and single A titles around it, however, look at when it released, September 11th and for NA/PAL it's Mar/May 04.

See how many heavy hitters surround it? How many new franchises you have or sequels that drastically improved on the first?
In that year alone, you have 2 unique DBZ fighting games, this list has changed formats a few times, but you can use other data sources like moby games, you can look at 2002 and 2004. It's packed with games that took risks along with a lot of "decent" Western games too.
PC, console, handhelds, all of them had small projects that could experiment, that slowly dried up as time went on.

It literally describes the aspects that got worse and were introduced then.
You should take some time out of your day today to learn how to tie a noose, purchase some sturdy, short rope too while you're at it.

He never tried to make something that would truly challenge him and his knowledge (only works within his area of expertise), and the results of his work were probably always rewarding to some degree. Certain kinds of projects can slowly suck the life out of you if you are not the type. I simply don't think he had to do any of those.

Stop changing the subject, I'm opposing the fact that LSD was a factor in inventing. While I'm at it, the title pisses me off because it takes for granted the breathtaking history of molecular biology and that culminated to the knowledge we had in the 80s. All the impressive discoveries precedences that time, you know nothing.

>He has spoken publicly about the importance of long hours of uninterrupted focus in his work.
Man no fucking shit. Goddamn do I hate people. Also hate not remembering my dreams. You know what helps with progress? Not having a job where you put in 50 plus hours a week, all completely focused and intense the entire time about fucking nothing important just some factory or food job, just completely balls to the wall busy all the time. And the schedule is literally open at 7 am, come back at 8pm to close, get up and do a double, whole time working with crackheads who slash your tires and make you look bad. You know what's fucking funny is I never got burnt out once probably bc I'm an athlete with a 36 act but my life is ten layers of hell if that helps, don't want to crash out? Have you tried sleeping less? Go down to like four hours that's all you really need to get things done. Unless it's actually complicated and you need your brain on

Around 2010s like with everything else, once the woke bullshit started poisoning everyday life. Just as far as 2008 you still had shit like Red Alert 3 with Tim Curry slapping bitches ass and flying off to the Moon, or even Borderlands 1 that had no gay crap whatsoever in it.

Nigger, that's a braindead reddit take that you were stupid enough to gobble it up. You asking me to refute this shows on what level you are. Aall you know is contained in that video and you had no interest in the subject before watching it.
You have no idea how we went from life as "spontaneous generation" to the central dogma in just 2 centuries, never asked yourself the question and don't know how this relates to PCR and to all the other important wetlab techniques in biochem/bio mol.

Not fucking that one haha holy shit wtf am I watching lol

You gotta get into it. Yes you can maybe boot camp it but you can't jump in too fast or you will get injured. And you need to rest. You need to be basically active, healthy diet, then conditioned enough to do conditioning without getting gassed or so sore that you can't keep doing that. Like swim bike or jog every day plus carry some wood.

Once you've completely skipped step one, the trick is actually the eccentric movement builds muscle. When you're letting the weight down. So you can just focus on that or find specific ways to make the concentric movement easier than the eccentric. Also just any lifting at all will pump you up so you always wanna do some pushups before going to the beach

idk about druggies but i think i get that feeling of being enlightened after reading books and while id try to write my own. it's not as much the process of reading or writing but rather the deep thought that comes during or more often times afterwards.
id certainly believe i aint getting smarter nor more productive while doing either of those things, though.
