>no a SINGLE open source music player has a function for remembering playback history per playlist
>can't use any of them to listen to a series of podcasts or audio books

how can such a simple thing not exist? not even a component (addon) for Foobar2000 does this out of the box.

Musicolet has 20 queues and it remembers the position in each queue. And it also has an option to remember the position inside every track. But it's on Android and it's not open source.

mpv and playlists is not a great combination.
also it should remember no matter how the application was shut down, even if unexpectedly.

right now I'm trying to write my own super simple and basic python gui for playlist playback history with vlc-python backend to handle the playback

Might be because audiobooks and podcasts are completely different than music.

not really, music compilations can be huge and people would want to have the playback position in those playlist also kept, otherwise you keep listening to the first bunch of tracks repeatedly while ignoring the last half.

audio is audio
playlists are playlists
