Might as well ask here. Why do people always complain about hard drive noise? I have a slim dell optiplex that I run Plex off of and keep all the media on an internal 3.5 inch and it barely makes noise even when it's me and 3 friends watching at the same time. Am I missing something?

They're no more or less autistic than the rest of us. It's a valid complaint. You probably lucked out and got a quiet drive. I've had drives that were super loud and annoying. Certain cases without rubber isolation mounts can amplify the noise.

They probably have them in a shitty case. When I put together my first server I was using a shitty 15 yo thermaltake case made of sheetmetal and with no rubber insulation for the single drive I had in there. I moved that build into a fractal d7 and all the noise disappeared. Now I have a d7xl with 7 20TB exos drives and a d7 with 3 12 TB drives. I haven't heard the drives ever.

It depends on the drive anon. I actually bought two identical 16TBs a while ago, and one is completely inaudible, while the other whenever I'm doing disk I/O it immediately goes CLANG BRRRRT CLACK-CLACK-CLACK BRR CLONG. It functions perfectly fine, zero issues in many months already and perfectly clean SMART, it's just how it is for some reason.
So when people say some drives are loud, it can mean that they're actually loud - in my case, louder than my CPU cooler, except when on full blast at high loads. And if you have like 4-8 of those, it would definitely be very noticeable if it's in your bedroom or something.

are we reading the same data? some Seagayte HDDs have 7-10% failure rates over 4-5 years. even compared to other Seagate models, the failure rates of those drives seem absolutely bad

Spindle speed has nothing to do with seek noise. Seagate's 7200RPM Barracudas are whisper quiet (too bad they turned them into SMR crap). By contrast a Toshiba P300 sounds like a grinder.
